In the novel ‘Runner’ there are several themes. Conflict, justice, destiny. The list goes on. But a couple of the main themes in this novel are friendship and love. Friendship and love are in almost all parts of the book. Whether it’s Charlie and Nostrils becoming friends, Charlie falling in love with Alice, or Charlie ending up becoming closer with Ma, friendship and love is everywhere in Runner. So this essay is going to be focused on the friendship and love in the novel ‘Runner’. Sometimes in life you instantly know that you like someone upon meeting them. In the novel 'Runner' this is shown by how Charlie reacts when meeting Nostrils. He can feel comfortable around him which he couldn’t with so many other people in his life. This occurred in the novel when Charlie yelled out the word 'Run!' to Nostrils to try and save him from Barlow’s gang. At the time of him saying this, Nostrils needed to be warned and Charlie warned him. This shows that Charlie is a true friend because… I knew he didn’t even have to think about warning him, he just did it. ‘My arms were busy pumping the air so I warned him the only way I could. I screamed. 'Run!' (Direct quote) Page 40. When Charlie warns Nostrils this shows the true power of friendship because he is helping him in a time of need.

In life there are people that need things more than you do. This occurred when Charlie was thinking of something to do with his money. He was told to do something good so he ended up deciding to help out Alice’s family because he thought they needed it more than him and also because he had a slight crush on Alice. ‘Two words kept repeating themselves. By Charlie helping out Alice’s family he shows the power of not only friendship but love because he is doing something because of his feelings towards
