The stakeholders at the clinic were motivated to improve patient outcomes, improve their screening and prescribing practices, and improve the health of the community. Through discussion with clinic stakeholders, lack of adequate and appropriate opioid therapy screening has been identified as a concern for the facility. Through research and collaboration with stakeholders, a clinically relevant screening tool was identified and implemented into the daily practice of clinicians. The goals of the proposed project was to improve screening practices of the health care providers at this Midwestern, rural North Dakota, primary care clinic, improve provider understanding of safe opioid prescribing and pain management therapies, and ultimately reduce the burden of opioid abuse, misuse, diversion, and addiction in the …show more content…
The proposed opioid screening program included a variety of interventions and recommendations to positively impact the opioid screening and prescribing. The development of this project included a thorough review of current literature on the issue of opioid abuse and misuse. This section of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) project provides a comprehensive discussion of the literature search process including databases searched and the process of literature appraisal and synthesis. Two tables are included in this section of the DNP project displaying information on the databases searched, keywords utilized in the search, search modifiers, number of articles retrieved and reviewed as well as providing a critical appraisal of the sources selected to support the interventions for the proposed DNP project. Additionally, gaps within the literature on opioid screening in primary care were discussed in their relation to the proposed project.
