Introduction
Attention getters
Imagine: Your father has a massive heart attack and has to have open heart surgery. Your best friend is in a car accident and loses a lot of blood. Your young cousin is a hemophiliac.
-Like everyone else in that situation you would expect the hospital to have enough blood to supply the large demand.
-Sadly however sometimes the hospitals cannot keep up with the heavy demand and currently we are in a major blood shortage.
-Don’t worry though there is a way to help--- by donating blood.
Preview: By the end of this speech you will not only know how and the requirements to donate blood but you will want to donate.
Transition (So why do we need blood donations?)
Body
Need
Throughout the nation, and the world for that matter, blood transfusions are needed every day.
-In fact, according to Life Share every two seconds somebody is in need of blood. Furthermore one in every seven patients admitted to the hospital will need a blood transfusion.
-Redcrossblood.org says that one pint of blood can help save as many as three lives. That’s one pint out of the ten that the average person’s body contains. That’s one tenth of your blood to save three people.
-I know what some of you are thinking, “ Why can’t the hospitals save the blood they don’t need and store it so that they would have a surplus?” Well mainly because blood is perishable, supplies of it need to be regularly replenished says cjbcblood.org. The shelf life of refrigerated blood is only 42 days recent studies show that blood actually degrades some before that six week period is up according to nytimes.com
