"The Scarlet Ibis" has a rather poignant plot. It focuses on how a physically disabled child, born William Armstrong, later referred to as Doodle, grows up with much influence from his older brother. The story is written in the eyes of his unnamed brother, and begins with the narrator's words of grief that fade into his memories when his brother was still alive, when William was first born. The older brother was first extremely disappointed to have an "invalid" brother and was so raged at this that he had planned to actually kill him. But when he saw his brother smile and look straight at him, he gained hope that his brother might be the kind of brother he had always wished for. When William was around the age of 2, his older brother had observed…

The conflict being examined in Simon Birch is Person vs. Person when Simon is ill-treated by his Sunday school teacher. Also it is Person vs. Society because Simon struggles to be accepted by the “normal” people. The conflict being examined in “Scarlet Ibis” is Pride vs. Health of Doodle when the narrator puts his pride over the health of his brother Doodle until he learns how to be more like “normal” kids his age. The conflicts in both stories are similar because they all have to do with how Simon and Doodle are being ill-treated because if their disabilities. They are different from each other because the conflicts from Simon Birch are about what is happening to Simon, but the conflict from “Scarlet Ibis” is about how the narrator is craving so much pride that he will do anything to get it, even risk his brother’s life.…

The quote, “The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us” is where it comes to Brother’s attention that his plan to train Doodle ultimately failed, and in a quick moment of cruelty and selfishness based on his bitter pride, he left Doodle to die by leaving him behind in a thunderstorm (Hurst 475). Brother, in the end of the story, leaving Doodle behind to be dead because of his hurt pride in knowing that his plan to train him failed is ultimately symbolism for how one’s pride can eventually bring down others. Since Brother’s pride in himself was based around his success in training Doodle to be an ideal sibling, Hurst further exemplifies his overall message in the story by having Brother kill his beloved sibling Doodle out of selfish pride. All in all, in “The Scarlet Ibis”, James Hurst uses motifs about Brother bringing Doodle to death as a way to symbolize his message that pride can lead to the downfall of…

Even though symbolism is shown throughout the story, the main symbol is the scarlet ibis itself. When everyone was eating lunch, Doodle saw the scarlet ibis in the tree. The family went outside to look at it, and it fell down the tree trying to fly away. The narrator says, “… it tumbled down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree… It’s long, graceful neck jerked twice into an S then straightened put…” (p. 180). They said even in death it still had grace. The same happened with Doodle’s death. The narrator took him and Doodle to the swamp behind their house, Old Woman Swamp, to learn how to run. While there, he got mad at Doodle so he ran away from him. Doodle ran after him but only so far until he fell behind, and when Brother (the narrator) went back for him, Doodle was dead. The narrator says, “He lay very awkwardly with his head thrown far back, making his vermillion neck appear unusually long and slim” (p. 183). Doodle died the same way the scarlet ibis did.…

The poem and story compares in ways, they both talk about things that you take too much care of. In Woman with flower by: Naomi long Madgett, Madgett’s poem talks about how you should take care of flowers and how a person should care and not leave them without water. In Madgett’s poem she also explains that if you coax something/someone it will become stiff and won’t grow and it will turn out of the opposite that you had imagined. In the “Scarlet ibis” by James Hurst the narrator pushes his brother far to teach him something that he could possibly not do. The main idea of Madgett’s poem is that too much tending of anyone/anything may result in the opposite of what you are expecting to happen.…

First in “The Scarlet Ibis” the bird the scarlet Ibis represents Doodle, the little boy everyone thought would die. The bird was a symbol for Doodle because both of them seem out of place and feel like they do not belong. Both had died and had red related somehow to their deaths. Doodle’s brother had said, “Limply, he fell backwards onto the Earth. He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant Red” (Hurst 395). Also “The bird’s arrival on the wings of a freak-storm raises the questions: What is Doodle’s natural environment? Where is his flock? The answers are not given exactly but are suggested symbolically” (Robinson 1). This symbol is important because it tells the readers that Doodle was kind of out of place but was a very strong person.…
