As the narrator and Doodle swim Doodle begins to get tired. When Doodle and his brother get out, they start to head home. On the way home a storm starts and the narrator runs away and leaves Doodle behind, in hopes of getting him to run so he can achieve his goal. As Doodle tries to run after his brother, he slips and falls in the mud. When the narrator goes back to take his brother home, he notices that Doodles face is sheltered in his arms which are resting on his knees. As the narrator lifts Doodles head, if falls back and that is when the narrator knows Doodle is dead. “...I lay there sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis…” The narrator shouts with heartbreak (118). This ties into all of the previous symbols. All of the symbols about the scarlet ibis being ill and dying were foreshadowing this moment. Overall the symbols played a big role in how the story played out. All the symbols foreshadowed the death of Doodle and gave hints on when it was going to happen. The story also portrays a very important message don't take the little things for granite. If the symbols were not in the story it would have been hard to know why the events in the story were set the way they are. All the symbols represent something different in Doodles life rather it be the coffin who symbolized death, or

Preacher 3 the scarlet ibis who represented Doodle or lastly the storm which represented something bad way coming. If these symbols were not provided

Then he began to cry. “It’s so pretty, so pretty, pretty, pretty.” (318). Despite the Ibis and Doodle’s magnificent traits, both ibis and Doodle suffer from a horrible storm. On the inside of this inn, the symbol is a Pegasus that is a model of a flying horse with golden stars stuck on all over him. This symbol, the Pegasus, represents a world of fantasy and beauty from which Gradgrinds children are not a part of.
