The Scarlet Letter
The Aspects of Public Guilt V.S. Private Guilt

The Scarlet Letter

Nathaniel Hawthorne

One of the main aspects and purposes of The Scarlet Letter, was to illustrate the differences between the public humiliation of a person about their sin's, or the private suffering of a persons guilt and sin in their private acts. The fact that Hester had not just one of these, but both to deal with in her life. Besides the fact that she kept Dimmesdales secret from the rest of the colony of his sin, but on top of that she was made to wear a letter "A" upon all her clothing an was to never take it off. The us that Dimmesdale is dealing with the private guilt which some say is worse than the public guilt, but others would say the exact opposite of this.

Secondly the fact that Hawthorne shows and portrays the legal statutes of how the people of those days viewed sin and their own expectations of its punishment should and would be dealt with according to the Bible an the strict interpretations of it on Adultry. The Fact that Hawthorne puts Hester up on the Scaffold in the begginning of the book to stand in front of the townspeople shows us his views on how he believed that Hester should be punished. Where as the peoples laws from those days clearly stated that a person was to punishable to death for commiting adultry. This scene in the book is just another example of how public guilt was displayed. The other example used in this scene thats controversial with this, whereas it is shown as private guilt was that Dimmesdale would not appear on the Scaffold and stand with Hester or baby Pearle. Hester was punished publicly numerous times without relentment for seven years because of Pearle. Pearles continuous teasing of Heaster an her wearing of the Scarlet Letter were a great deal of her punishment.

Lastly, is the personal torture of guilt and emotional destruction of people involved in the affair really enough punishment for the sin, whether publicly or privatley punished.Hester was Publicly punished, once upon the scaffold in the beginning of the book, also in the fact that the she was also punished just from haveing Pearle around. And the third thing she was punnished for besides the Letter "A", but by keeping Chillingworths secret as well, privately that he was her husband. She also must privately keep her guilt a secret that he was her husband and that he meant to cause Dimmesdale pain and grief for his sins. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth both are found to suffer privately, Chillingworth because he knew that Dimmesdale was the father of Pearle and he also was Hesters husband as well. The suffering that Dimmesdale went through was an agony for him as he is said to hold his hand over his heart quite alot towards the end of the book. Whether this was because he was feeling the guilt of adultry or because of some self-inflicted punishment that he placed upon his self, that hurt him so privately that he couldnt bare to tell anybody until his last act told in the book. Some believe that he Branded hisself with a branding iron in the shape of the letter "A" or that Chillingworth had been giving him some kind of concoction that made a evilish black and sinful colored "A" upon his Heart.

These are just a few of the differences between the public humiliation of a person about their sin's, or the private suffering of a persons guilt and sin, portrayed in Nathaniel Hawthornes, The Scarlet Letter.

Hester can atone for her sin of adultery, but every day that she keeps the secret of her lover, and the true identity of Rodger Chillingworth a secret she is committing a sin. If Hester would have “Take heeds how thou deniest to him---who, perchance, hath not the courage to grasp it for himself---the bitter, but wholesome, cup that is now presented to thy lips!”(Dimmesdale 47) things would have been infinitely better for everyone. Everyone Hester Prynne loves, she does in a hypocritical way. She loves Pearl enough to sacrifice to feed and clothe her, but she does not love Pearl enough to give her a father. Hester loves Dimmesdale, but she does not love him enough to expose his sin publicly, and she conceals her knowledge of Chillingworth. Either you love something whole-heartedly, or you don’t. Hawthorne might have portrayed Hester in a more favorable light then the other characters, but still she should have to wear a scarlet H in addition to her…

Hester and Dimmesdale get drastically different punishments. First, Hester gets imprisoned for several years. Also, she stands on scaffold where everyone can see. This means she is revealed to everyone and they are able to recognize who she is and what she has done. It is a fundamental factor of how people are shamed and humiliated by the society at this time period(“How”). Lastly, she is to wear the scarlet letter A on her chest. The letter A stands for adultery. It is elaborately embroidered with beautiful decorations(“In”). By wearing this letter, people are able to notice her as an adulteress. On the contrary to exposure punishments, Dimmesdale’s sin is not revealed and punished until the end. When Hester is sentenced to wear the scarlet letter, she denies to reveal the identity of her baby’s father. This is when everything starts to stay as a secret. Dimmesdale lives rest of his life with the guilt of his sin. By looking at everything going around Hester, he feels guilt and remorse inside him. He is atoned for his own sin. His guilt eats him away in his spirit(“The”). It leaves worse results than Hester, who is publicly known as an adulteress and shunned. Dimmesdale’s secret sin torments his spirit. Also, he is tortured by Hester’s husband, Roger Chillingworth. As a result of the sin, Chillingworth puts all his effort in torturing Dimmesdale. This can be considered one of the…

In chapter 8, Dimmesdale, Mr. Wilson, and Governor Bellingham are visited by Hester and Pearl at the Governor’s mansion. When pearl is asked “who made thee?”, she responds that she was not made, but rather "plucked . . . off the bush of wild roses that grew by the prison door.". This causes the governor and Mr. Wilson to immediately become horrified and ready to take Pearl from Hester’s custody. As Pearl protests her God given right for Pearls custody, she pleads that Dimmesdale speak for her. Dimmesdale uses religious appeal to convince the governor and Mr. Wilson that God gave Pearl to Hester and it is not their right to take the child away. He says that God gave Pearl to Hester as both “a blessing and a reminder of her sin”, which is the leading argument that convinces Bellingham and Mr. Wilson to leave Pearl in Hester’s custody. Dimmesdale uses a religious allusion in chapter 8 to convince them that they should leave Pearl to Hester’s custody and he is indeed successful in doing so. By Dimmesdale sticking up for Hester so easily and powerfully, it reveals that he has deep feelings for her and he is in some way responsible for he sin.…

After Hester committed adultery and was forced to wear the scarlet letter, she could no longer go to church without the pastor speaking about adultery and using her as an example. The novel reads, “If she entered a church, trusting to share the Sabbath smile of the Universal Father, it was often her mishap to find herself the text of the discourse” (Hawthorne 95). Even when Hester walked the streets and was simply trying to live a normal life, she often ended up getting called out for the transgression she committed against her husband. She was now seen as an example of woman’s frailty and weakness. The poem also similarly shows that women are seen as weak in relationships and sin. In the poem it says, “...how, after leading them astray, can you wish them without strain?” (Cruz 296). This shows that men, and even women themselves, saw women as weak and unable to live life without a male figure in their lives. Then, if they are led astray they are severely shunned and punished. Both the poem and novel show that in the 1600’s women were seen as the weakness and more as sinners than…

In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne utilizes Puritan ideology to convey a philosophical reflection on sin and redemption. Adulteress Hester Prynne must wear a scarlet A to mark her shame, and while her lover, Arthur Dimmesdale, remains unidentified and is wracked with guilt, her husband, Roger Chillingworth, seeks revenge. Although all three characters contemplate redemption, it is only Hester that chooses to confront her sin; Dimmesdale and Chillingworth refuse. This decision is heavily influenced by their respective morals. Hester’s morals of truth, forgiveness, and honesty allow her to be almost fully redeemed in the eyes of the public, whereas Dimmesdale's perverse loyalty to the morally corrupt society that hinders his love for…

One of the numerous examples is the school shooting on April 20, 1999 at Columbine High school that ended in a massacre. In this essay, I will discuss three arguments that indicates why I am against firearms. Firstly, weapon possession creates more crime. Secondly, a firearm could end up by mentally ill people, even when it is bought legally. At last, most of the time, citizens are not able to defend themselves with firearms. Dimmesdale's mark embodies truth, sin, and shame. Hiding the truth only makes the consequence worse and in Dimmesdale's case his mark is punishment for not being true to his whole identity. One should make the best of who they truly are and also whom society views them as. One should not deny any of their flaws because they are a part of whom they are.
