AUTHOR'S PREFACE
This volume is the second of a series, the first of which is The Science of Getting Rich. As that book is intended solely for those who want money, so this is for those who want health, and who want a practical guide and handbook, not a philosophical treatise. It is an instructor in the use of the universal Principle of Life, and my effort has been to explain the way in so plain and simple a fashion that the reader, though he may have given no previous study to New Thought or metaphysics, may readily follow it to perfect health. While retaining all essentials, I have carefully eliminated all non-essentials. I have used no technical, abstruse, or difficult language, and have kept the one point in view at all times. As its title asserts, the book deals with science, not speculation. The monistic theory of the universe — the theory that matter, mind, consciousness, and life are all manifestations of One Substance — is now accepted by most thinkers, and if you accept this theory, you cannot deny the logical conclusions you will find here.     For health care providers to deliver the best holistic care that patients deserve, a thorough spiritual assessment must be included during their care. With more research showing a relationship between supporting a patient’s spirituality with their health and ability to cope with illness, it is now a requirement of organizations to include a spiritual assessment to maintain accreditation with The Joint Commission. The minimum required of a spiritual assessment by The Joint Commission is to determine the patient’s religion and if they have any spiritual practices that are important to them (The Joint Commission, 2005). When I first began my research for this assignment, I believed that was all my facility included in our spiritual assessment done upon admission; just the minimum. There is a very small section in the admission database titled “Spirituality.” In this section there are two questions: “Do you have a religious preference” and “do you have any religious or cultural beliefs that may affect your care during your stay?” When I came across more material and all that should be included in a thorough spiritual assessment, I found that my facility’s admission database included a very comprehensive spiritual assessment placed throughout the admission database. Therefore, my facilities admission database served as a great reference in creating a spiritual assessment tool and serve as great way to ease into such a personal conversation. Many of my questions were created from the three empirical referents of spiritual well-being (personal faith, spiritual contentment and religious practice) and from intervening variables (severity of illness, social support and stressful life events) of the middle-range theory of spiritual well-being in illness…

    As healthcare providers we must keep in mind that we provide care to patients from a number of different religious traditions. It is our job to understand and respect the ideals that may affect our patient and family members. Sixty one percent of Americans state that religion is the most important thing in their daily lives, (Gallup, 1990). Ninety four percent agreed that spiritual health is just as important as physical health. The Joint Council for accreditation of healthcare organizations (JCAHO), states that a spiritual assessment should be preformed on each patient identifying their denomination, beliefs and spiritual practices. With so many different religions, it is difficult to know what our patient’s beliefs and rituals are. So it is important to ask the patient and their family members about their cultural and religious beliefs while hospitalized. Understanding their beliefs can lead to a positive hospital experience. For some, the simple belief in the power of prayer can be displayed. Understanding your patient’s religious beliefs is important because it can be a deciding factor to many tests or procedures. Healthcare professionals should be familiar with moral and religious norms. There may be a time when your religious beliefs don’t come close to what your patient believes, but it is critical to find a middle ground where they can practice their beliefs without affecting yours. It’s not our jobs to question or try to understand our patient’s beliefs, but it is important to allow our patients to utilize their beliefs in the fullest to encourage the patient to heal physically, mentally and spiritually.…
