THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

GLORIA WANTED TO FIND OUT IF THE COLOR OF FOOD WOULD EFFECT WHETHER KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN WOULD SELECT IT FOR LUNCH SHE PUT FOOD COLORING INTO FOUR IDENTICAL BOWLS OF MASHED POTATOES WITHOUT COLOR. EACH CHILD CHOSE A SCOOP OF POTATOES OF THE COLOR OF THEIR CHOICE AT LUNCH. GLORIA DID THIS EXPERIMENT USING 100 CHILDREN. SHE RECORDED THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT CHOSE EACH COLOR.

WRITE A CASUAL (TEST) QUESTION FOR THE ABOVE SENERIO—What is the effect that color has on the children’s selection of mashed potatoes?

WRITE A HYPOTHESIS FOR THE ABOVE SENARIO—
The kindergarteners will choose the mashed potatoes without color more often than those with color because that is what they perceive to be a normal food selection.

Laura wanted to find out how the length of a pencil determined whether kids would select if for use in class. She places 5 pencils in front of each student, 4 of them being various lengths, 1 is a No. 2, 2 longer than a No.2 and two shorter. Each child picked a pencil to write with. She recorded the number of students that picked each pencil length.

WRITE A HYPOTHESIS FOR THE ABOVE SENARIO—If given the choice to write with a longer or shorter pencil. The children will select the No. 2 pencil more than 60% of the time because it is the size they are use to writing with.
