The Seattle Wall In Post Alley, By Park Place Market
Walls are a big part of our history. Whether they are a major tourist attraction, costing America billions of dollars, or separating a country, they play a big part in our lives. The Seattle gum wall, the wall on the border between Mexico and the US, and the Berlin wall are a few examples of important walls in the world. The Seattle gum wall in Post Alley, by Park Place Market, is the second most germy tourist attraction in the world. It is a wall filled with 26 years worth of chewing gum. The tradition started in 1990, when people got anxious waiting in line for the movie theaters. People used to use the gum to stick coins on the wall. This tradition ended, but the gum still stuck. Theater employes tried to scrape the gum of the wall once
or twice, but eventually gave up in 1999 when the wall became an official tourist attraction of Seattle. On November 3rd, 2015, the wall was cleaned for the first time in 20 years. It didn't last for long though; by the next week, the wall was covered with fresh gum in all shapes, sizes, and colors. The Berlin wall is one of the most powerful symbol of World War II. On August 13, 1961, the German Democratic Republican government began to build a wall made of concrete and barbed wire called “Antifascistischer Schutzwall”, or “antifascist bulwark.” The Berlin Wall was built to separate East Germany, which is communist, from West Germany, which is democratic, and to keep East Germans from escaping to West Germany. After Germany was defeated in World War II, the country was divided into four zones, each occupied by a country that was involved in the war (the Allied Forces) : the United States, France, Great Britain and the Soviet Union. Their was still tension between the communist territory and the democratic territories, so the Berlin Wall was built to separate them. At least 136 people died trying to cross the wall. The west side of the wall is completely covered in graffiti, but the east side is not. On October 3rd, 1990, Germany became one country again, although they still kept the wall intact.
