In The Secret Life of Bees, Lily the main character in the book, travels to new places to learn about her mother who died when she was only four. She grew up in Sylvan, South Carolina in 1964 with her abusive father, T-Ray and black maid, Rosaleen. She and Rosaleen escape to Tiburon, where they meet the Boatwright sisters, who happen to know a lot about Lily’s mother. Sue Monk Kidd, the author of The Secret Life of Bees, develops the idea that you shouldn’t be afraid of change.
