Walter Mitty In this very entertaining excerpt the writer uses various versions of satire to bring attention to the surrounding or background of each passage. Mitty, a married aging man tends to take periodic times of the day to dream. The writer does an excellent job of absorbing the reader. The writer uses several metaphors to describe a certain sound in the writing. Though used to interpret several different sounds the “pocketa-pocketa” never changed in its essence. The first time this metaphor was used was Mitty’s first daydream which insinuates that Mitty is aboard a battle ship and the thrusting of the engine is described by the writer as “pocketa-pocketa”. In the second daydream of Mitty’s the “pocketa-pocketa” was described as the sound of an emergency machine in the operating room. The fourth daydream of Mitty presented “pocketa-pocketa” was given as the sound of a fire blowing cannon. The writer also used ambiguity to awake the mind, for me this resulted in my wanting to read more of the writing. In Mitty’s first daydream, the writer implies that the characters are aboard a ship or some type of vessel however the writer never directly says that the characters are aboard. This type of approach leaves room for growth of the writer based on the unbiased input of other professionals. I think this would definitely cause one to open up and increase their imagination. This also causes the one who performs this task to become intimate with the material by delving into the subject and all external associations of the
