This movie is set in the dot com era where internet is available to almost every facet of society. Losses on the print version of magazines have resulted in some of the publications scrambling to the online platform to capture the internet market. I was a nervous wreck in the face of competition. My competitors were much older and much much more talented than I was. I was also dead scared of tripping over one of the steeples. My form teacher was there to watch my race. Before it began, she grabbed me by the arms and gave me a reassuring smile, telling me that race will be fine. Still scared of the competition I felt reassured that I would face whatever hurdle that would come my way. 3 years on I won that event 3 years in a row and every race, I won it by quite a distance. It goes to show that fear is in our nature, but how we face it proves our character and I’m thankful that we have friends and family to give us confidence in the face of our fears.
Despite it being an imaginative movie on hope and freedom, I think The secret life of Walter Mitty gives rise to real questions that everyone should reflect and act on. If we are doing the things that we envisioned ourselves to do and if not, what we’re doing or not doing that keeps us from achieving that ideal. Regardless of how set in life you are or how old you are, The movie gives life to the things you have in your bucket list and spurs you out to go out and just do them. What’s stopping you? Why stop?
