The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty By James Thurbur
In the story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurbur, the main character, Walter Mitty, fantasizes very unrealistic and heroic daydreams. Mitty wishes his life was more interesting. He takes normal everyday activities and turns them into a fun adventure in his mind to escape his boring life. Mitty’s wife, Mrs. Mitty, is always nagging him and looking out for him. I feel that her actions are influenced by the fact that she has to protect Mitty from himself and has his best interests at heart. Because Mitty is in his fantasies more than he is in his reality, Mrs. Mitty has to watch out for him. She makes sure that Mitty is safe and in reality when she is with him. He looked at his wife, in the seat beside him, with shocked astonishment…. “You were up to fifty-five,” she said…. “You’re tensed up again,” said Mrs. Mitty. “It’s one of your days. I wish you’d let Dr. Renshaw look you over””(Thurbur 2). In this quote, Mitty is daydreaming while driving. If not for Mrs. Mitty, they would probably be in the hospital. Mrs. Mitty is always looking out for her husband wherever they go. She acts as if Mitty is her child and she has to protect him. She does have to watch out for him though. Mitty is very imaginative, wishful, and forgetful. This is shown in the story when Thurbur expresses, “When he came out into the street again, with the overshoes in a box under his arm, Walter Mitty began to wonder what the other thing was his
