The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber
Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” demonstrates the idea of fear, embarrassment, rebirth, and liberation through various vital symbolic moments throughout Francis’ short journey.
This is a short story of a man, Francis Macomber, who candidly expresses severe embarrassment, let alone is shown to be the prey. Francis’s wife, Margaret, has always been his predator to survive. Margaret is only married to Francis for the money so she feeds off his cowardice as he tries to survive her kicking him all over the place. It is out of embarrassment. Francis Macomber ran from the lion out of fear and realize the mass amount of disappointment and embarrassment that fell upon him. Margaret’s red face is out of shame. Shammed upon her husband’s actions and his cowardice. She then starts leaning towards Mr. Wilson and his manliness and you’ll notice in what she says as they are eating.
“And I want to see you perform again. You were lovely this morning. That is if blowing things’ heads off is lovely.”
The beginning of Francis Macomber’s liberation and rebirth starts when he finally shoots the buffalo. I believe the buffalo symbolized all his fears in one animal. With all the growth, he created, he was finally able to overcome those fears and pull the trigger; Hence the birth of a new man. Francis was now free from embarrassment, fear, and cowardice. This was the start of something new, but that was the death of him. Margaret has always been aware this whole story and she noticed Francis’ new coming of age and was not happy for him.
