When Violet states,
“The two big imaginary lines are one down the center of the face and on just across the top of the cheeks. This is my theory, anyway. The nose is where those lines intersect. The more a lesion interferes with those lines, the more noticeable it is. See, the hardest lesion to carry off is one on the nose itself ” (22). In reaction to this, the feelings and thoughts of other characters were shared, “We were all kind of stunned” (23).
This shows that the characters notice the difference between Violet and other people in this society. Considering Violet has advanced vocabulary it is easier for people to acknowledge the characteristic differences Violet has. Not only is Violet's vocabulary different, she also recognizes the impact feed has on people’s brain. Violet observes people changing themselves to follow trends, she notices people consuming unneeded and useful items just for the sensation of buying things. Consequently, because Violet sees all the flaws in society it’s harder for her to fit in. In this society being different is not an acceptable lifestyle and that is why many people undoubtedly accept the feed. Nevertheless, it has made Violet appreciate and acknowledge that she is her own person. This has made her perpetually display her personal identity and knowledge to enforce that the feed hasn’t changed her. If Violet had accepted the feed and didn’t grow up in the life she did, she would have different values and beliefs making her just like everybody else. Violet fights against the feed because she is proud of her values and is thrilled she isn’t being controlled and composed by the feed.
