The north side has the majority of the cities. Also the population increased in the North between the 1800 and 1860 mostly because of immigration. The economy in the North was based on the manufacturing. They used the cotton that was grown in the South. There was a short growing season and the cold made the farming more difficult and the cities developed as a trading center. The forest was used for lumber to build ships. The climate from the North was very different compared
to the South. They had warm, humid summers and cold snowy winters. The people in the North started using the waterpower to run factories that they had.
In the South it was made up of Europeans mostly from England, Scotland, and enslaved Africans. 1/3 of the population in the South were slaves. Instead of the economy being based of manufacturing in the South it was based on agriculture. The culture in the South was determined by upper class plantation owners and their families. They had very few schools and churches which weren’t very well organized. Only the white, wealthy were mostly educated. They also wanted cheap imports and they were against tariffs. The climate was ideal for the agriculture which was warm and sunny with long summers, mild winters, and lots of rain.
A couple of the similarities that both the North and the South have in common is that both parts needed something from one another. The North used the cotton that the South provided and the South used the clothing that the North made with the cotton that they used. They both had railroads that they needed. Both of the North and South were made up of immigrated races. Although not everybody treated their slaves poorly and some of them did, and the North and South both had slavery.
In the North the economy was based on the manufacturing, but in the South it was based on the agriculture. The canals were mostly in the North and in the South still depended on the steamship. The fertile soil was ideal for growing crops in the South and in the North cities developed near rivers and bays. Irish, German, and other Europeans mostly settled in the North. The population in the South was made up of Europeans who were mostly from England and Scotland. Cities in the North develop in the North as centers of trade and most Southerners lived on farms.
In the end the North and South have very many differences as they do similarities. You can very easily compare the two of them and tell what things they had in common.
