The Similarities Between Oedipus And Jay Gatsby
Oedipus and Jay Gatsby both have goals they aspire to complete. Oedipus wants to save his kingdom while Gatsby wants the girl of his dreams. The way each attempts to complete this is much different. Oedipus solves the riddle of the Sphinx to become the King of the City of Thebes. Once he solves the riddle his people accept him as a savior to rid the city of the filth that has been brought upon them. Oedipus even went so far as to make a curse on who the culprit may be. “Upon the murderer I invoke this curse” (Sophocles 266). Oedipus also goes to retrieve an oracle, the blind Teiresias, to foresee who is plaguing the city. Once Oedipus discovers he is the plague he still tries in vain to save his kingdom. Gatsby does not have a kingdom to save,
