‘An individual’s interaction with others and the world around them can enrich or limit their experiences of belonging ’
This statement has two point of views in which that can relate to the novel ‘ The simple Gift’ by Steven Herrick and the poem ‘ Refugees blues’ by WH Auden. In the novel ‘ the simple gift’ conveys in the statement ‘An individual’s interaction with others and the world around them can enrich experiences of belonging’ whereas in the poem ‘ refuges blues’ conveys ‘An individual’s interaction with others and the world around them can limit their experiences of belonging ’.
In the novel ‘the simple gift’ we are able to witness an individual’s (billy) interaction with others and the world around him which enriches their experience of belonging. On page109 “Hobos like us” the title of the poem highlights the shared experience of billy and old bill. …show more content…
Billy labels himself as a hobo, creating a sense of unity and belonging between himself and old bill through the new experience in life billy now faces as a ‘hobo’. In the title ‘ hobos like us’ Steven Herrick uses a simile ‘like’ in aim to create in the readers mind as it is a descriptive set of words.
The poem ‘Refugee Blues’ by WH Auden draws the reader’s attention to the fight and struggles faced by refugees, ‘the city has 10 million souls yet there is no place for these two individuals’ this quote conveys the difference between the refugees and the ‘other people’ showing that because they are refugees they have limitations to where they could stay by the quote ‘if you’ve got no passport you’re officially dead’ meaning they do not belong due to their life experiences in the past.
Therefore as ‘the simple gift’ shows as billy interacts with others gives him a new path in life also a place to belong as he states ‘ Hobos like us’ in the novel, were as the poem ‘ refugee blues’ shows the migrants les interactions with the world has limited the path and stoping then for belonging, making not belonging to society.

‘I’m outside the door’
I’m outside the door on Christmas day, gasping in the cold waiting for someone to hear me outside, but no answer. No answer, no noise... Nothing at all, all I can here are the chatting of my teeth as I clench myself towards the door hoping for a bit of warmth. Who am i? I was the peace maker within a family, my family.
Was a typical Christmas eves day in a little cottage house down by a river covered in white snow, as my family gathered around the fireplace singing Christmas carols, drinking the good old fashioned eggnog as always, telling stories, laughing, was a typical family where everyone belonged together on a Christmas eve.
We all belonged together as a family, in a loving family relationship with my children. But that was last year, many things change in just one year, even a month.
This year, this Christmas, was not like any other Christmas. In one year, a wife decides to divorce, and children decide to grow up and also believe that belonging to a group of friends, beats belonging to a loving relationship with a family. So I am here alone on a Christmas day, alone, no family, lost the sense of belonging as I tried to contact the whole family to come together on a Christmas day to forgive and forget everything so that we can belong again. Even though I thought I had made peace within a once loved family with belonging. I am still outside the door.

The Best of Best Friends
The meaning of best friends people say is that best friends are very special people in your life. They are the first people you think about when you make plans. They are the first people you go to when you need someone to talk to. You will phone them up just to talk about nothing, or the most important things in your life. When you’re sad they will try their hardest to cheer you up. They give the best hugs in the world! They are the shoulder to cry on, because you know that they truly care about you. In most cases they would take a bullet for you, coz it would be too painful to watch you get hurt. In my case, that’s what I thought. I was wrong. Very wrong.
I had a best friend once, known her for about seven to eight years of friendship hidden with betrayal lies and regrets. Her name was Kara, Jessica Kara, known as the paranoid trouble maker within the neighbourhood.
So… ill start the story from the begging. It all started with a phone call from Jessica’s ex-boyfriend Jason. We were pretty close and Jessica hated that. Jason for the last couple of months had begun to get suspicious about this girls status and Facebook who had recently added him, most of the girls status sounded a lot like Jessica Kara’s life. Jason had sent me a link to her page but surprisingly I was already friends with her I don’t ever remember adding this ‘Eliza’ girl, so I also started to investigate.
Days and days went on ad I investigated this ‘Eliza’ girl then I realised. It was Jessica. A felt a pain in my back as if I someone had put a knife in my back. That someone was Jessica Kara. What did I do next? I confronted her about this Eliza girl, her reply ‘I don’t know what you are on about’, yea right my sister and I thought, coincidental accounted deleted an hour later.
A week went by so very fast as Jessica called me abusing me about some fake prank, my reply was ‘it was not me, I don’t have time for you’, it’s true, it was not me. The only other I can think of to prank Jessica would be my lovey, wonderful, trouble starter sister. Next thing after the other, Jessica was at my house, next thing happening Jessica’s Brother William fighting my sister’s boyfriend Kyle, everything went so fast from the talking to the fighting, to were the end were everyone went their separate ways.
New Year’s Eve. New start, new beginning, new time to change. I was with the family at a concert for the church on New Year’s Eve, so I thought. One phone call from Jessica Kara had to ruin my night; well that’s what I was thinking anyway. I left my phone to ring couple of times till I answered and the first thing that Jessica had said on the phone is “DON’T HANG UP ON M EPLEASE, LISTEN” my reply was “what”, why was she calling me? Then she said it, “I’m sorry, I want to start new, but the bad things behind, I would like to be friends”. Did I want to be friends with her? Offcourse I did, but do I trust her? No, no I don’t.
Well, every story has moral, this moral in this story is to forgive, but never forget.
