When Rosas “master” got married Rosa fell in love with her masters head slave George. When Rosa’s “master” realized that the two were in love she asked her husband if they could be married but he objected the idea and arranged for george to be sent to a plantation and ended up beating Rosa to death because she would not sleep with him and avoided him. When george heard of this he murdered his old “master” and went to escape when they captured another slave and was about to hang him for the murder. George confessed to the murder and saved the other slave from being hung.The newspaper read “Fiend-like murder. Frederic Dalcho, (the husband), one of our most wealthy and respected citizens, was robbed and murdered last week, by one of his slaves. The black demon was caught and hung; and hanging was too good for him.” (Cain 589). This story repulses me in many different ways, the newspaper said nothing about Rosa being beaten to death or made any attempt to uncover the truth about why George killed his “master”. At the time it made no difference to anyone if a slave was killed or not, she seen was nothing more than property or livestock, living to serve her master then die.
