Procedure:

I will talk about the night sky and ask the students about the objects they could see in the night sky. What things exist in our galaxy? I will have the students watch the video; “The Story of our Solar System” on Youtube and then discuss some of the information they learned from this video. I will use some assistive materials like PowerPoint to show more information about the different objects we have in our galaxy. I will discuss with the students why we live on Earth and why we can’t live on any other planet. What are the characteristics of planet Earth?
I will ask each student to pick a peer to work with in finding more information and facts about a specific planet, its size, how far it is from the sun, and how many moons each planet has. The science lesson was on the water cycle. This was a great lesson to observe. The teacher read from the text book a brief description of this process. The students were not as interested in this aspect of the lesson. The teacher then showed some great video that allowed the students to see the process. The students enjoyed the interaction with great technology and with each other. The teacher did a wonderful job of incorporating other content areas that the students were learning. There was an emphasis on literacy and on comprehending the content (Carin, 2009).…

In order to prepare students of the future, it is necessary to engage students with the aid of new technologies. Students of today are digital natives. They have grown up in a society filled with innovative technology. Technology is advancing in an accelerated pace. It is role of educators to keep pace with these advances and find new and innovated ways to facilitate student learning. “Traditional 20th century educational practices will no longer provide you with the skills you need to teach your students effectively how to become productive citizens in today’s high-tech, global workplace” (Shelly, Gunter & Gunter, 2012).…

During my practicum I observed a 5th grade science class that was studying the solar system. The class began with the teacher asking the students what they know about the solar system. Many students raised their hands and responded to the question when called on. After a few minutes of inquiring the teacher proceeded to show the students the solar system using the Solar System Scope on the Smart board. The classroom environment was filled with anticipation of actually getting to see what the solar system looks like. The students enjoyed seeing and feeling the effect of being in space where they could get a closer look at the planets. It was great to see a lot of enthusiastic and eager students. After showing the students how the solar system…

Introduction: Every physics student has had a lot of experience with the force of gravity. Unfortunately, this experience is limited to the interaction between a very large object, the Earth, and much smaller objects that are very close to it. This is a very limited range of the possibilities. Software simulations of gravity allow physics students to explore a variety of other gravitational interactions between objects. These activities are designed to be used with the JAVA applet My Solar System that can be found on the Physics Education Technology (PhET) website at the University of Colorado at Boulder.…

The Kuiper Belt is a thick ecliptic band which contains over 200 million small, icy objects. These objects, known as the Kuiper Belt Objects or trans- Neptunians, were discovered in 1992 by Jewitt and Lu. The first Kuiper Belt Object discovered in 1992, is QB1 (1992) and is 150 miles wide. The Kuiper Belt is about 30 AU to 50 AU away from the Sun. The Kuiper Belt is very important because of two specific things; the first being, Kuiper Belt Objects are remnants from the earliest phases of the solar system and are tens of millions of years old and secondly, that the Kuiper Belt is the source of short-period comets.…
