Shall I compare the poem to a painting? The poem is more beautiful and more temperate. The square paper does inhibit the roam of imaging. And a picture’s life is too short to a date.
“The solitary reaper” is the poem. When you taste it, you can feel the beauty of picture; when you swallow it, you can touch the beauty of rhetoric; when you chew and digest it, you can embrace the beauty of solitariness.
In the first stanza, William Wordsworth depicts a lonely girl reaping and singing on a quiet and vast Highland. The successful use of verbs such as “cut”, “bind”, ”stop” and detailed nouns make me feel as if I were in the scene which he describes.
Then in the second stanza, the rhetoric is beautiful. He use the comparison to indicate that the girls voice is more beautiful than nightingale and cuckoo-bird whose thrilling sound can break the silence of the sea of sands. Through the comparison, the beauty of the reaper’s voice finally sinks in. What’s more, the poet also utilizes the contrast in the first stanza to emphasize the solitariness of the lass.
Chewing and digesting the whole passage, the beauty of solitariness dwells on my heart. From the second stanza to last, I find that the focus has transferred from the reaper to the poet himself. Especially, from the last two lines ”The music in my heart I bore, Long after it was heard no more”. Maybe it’s so called sad eyes pick sadness, lonely hearts feel loneliness.
This is the three beauty of “the solitary reaper”.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, so long lives this and this gives life to thee.
