The Song Mama's Broken Heart '
The song “Mama’s Broken Heart”, written by Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally, and Kacey Musgraves, expresses the battle between a distressed and indignant daughter (portrayed by the singer) towards her overbearing mother. The daughter, who recently went through a breakup, starts acting out in regards to her own self-pity, and gets scolded by her mother for being foolish. “Mama’s Broken Heart” reflects on how the daughter’s mother is still deeply rooted in her traditional upbringing, where women were raised to keep themselves composed when confronted with a distressing situation. An example of this is when the mother tells her daughter to “Run and hide your crazy and start actin’ like a lady, ‘cause I raised you better, gotta keep it together”.

She is drawn to the music of the land and yet she wonders why Indians being Holocausted and Africans “jumping the broom on Sunday”(getting married) to show the female’s willingness to “clean the courtyard of the new home she had joined” (AMR), are not part of country music. Despite the missing links connecting the experiences of people apart from the mainstream, the speaker loves the depth of “the haunted-hunted heart,” experiencing the pain of love in the music. Eventually, though, the speaker realizes she will never be known to sing a good country song—country is color-coded and she is the wrong shade of country,…

The mother immediately feels that she could not help her daughter make such major decisions, since her daughter has already lived for nineteen years and “there us all that life that has happened outside of me, beyond me.” The mother has lived a harsh life - she became a mother at the age of nineteen in a “world of depression,” and the father of her children ran away because he could not handle taking care of the family. The mother has resigned herself to the life she now lives, and that she will never be more than a mother at an ironing board.…

Reba illustrates that Fancy is a young girl who is sent out to work through a form of prostitution to a make a better life for her family and herself. She illustrates by using deep tone throughout the lyrics. In line 25 Reba says, “She handed me a heart shaped locket that said to thine own self be true” and in the video she expresses how angry she is by ripping the necklace off her neck and throwing it on the ground. It can be inferred that she is angry about her mom putting her out on the streets. At this point she doesn’t understand how she could do this to a young girl who’s barely a woman. You can tell Reba is angry because why would she rip of something her mother gave her not knowing if this would be the last time she saw her. This deep tone she uses, which is illustrated as anger, is just one of the many that she illustrates throughout the lyrics of her song. Another example of the deep tone she uses is contained in lines 69-72. Here she talks about still being able to hear her mom’s voice and how desperate…

I chose these lines to tell out a story from the mother’s perspective. She has feelings of love and affection towards her daughter but could not take care of her because she had to work in order to provide for her. These lines show how much she regrets not listening to her daughter’s pleas and leaving her alone some nights. The mother tells a story of how she would rush back home, and when “[Emily] saw [her]”, Emily would “break into a clogged weeping that could not be comforted”. The cries still haunt the mother and so do these memories.…
