The Song of Kahunsha
“The Song of Kahunsha” is a novel by Anosh Irani about a boy who runs away from an orphanage with a dream to find his father, however, once exposed to the real, devastating society we live in, Chamdi finds himself struggling to climb out of Bombay’s deepest chasm of violence, racism, and poverty. The author does a fantastic job of clearly displaying the development of the protagonist by providing a series of twists and turns in Chamdi’s life which consequently contributes to his maturity from a little boy from the orphanage, to a real man out in the real world. Chamdi struggles with internal conflicts in the beginning of the story, also known as Man vs. Self. Curious and questioning the existence of his parents, he begins to demand answers from those around him which contributes to the development of a new dream; to find his father. With all of the threats and dangers Bombay's present racial war proposed, Chamdi never dared to step outside of the walls of the orphanage. "Mrs. Sadiq, who runs the orphanage, has not allowed any of the children to step outside the orphanage walls over the past three weeks" (page 10). Due to problems with the landlord, the orphans were expected to leave within a month and Chamdi took advantage of this opportunity to carry on with his initial goal. “He now knows he has to leave the orphanage before it leaves him” (page 41). We notice the first step towards maturity as Chamdi takes a brave step out of the orphanage without any money, knowledge, and possessing only a white cloth smeared with his father's blood.

Chamdi spends his first few nights on the streets with another boy named Sumdi and his little sister, Guddi. He is introduced to the underground begging system of Bombay; "Anand Bhai is our boss. All beggars who work in this area must give him whatever we earn. Then he will give us some money back" (page 118). Chamdi is now facing external conflicts with the horrific weather conditions commonly referred to as Man

Nagra uses different uses of language and techniques to gain attention. In stanza one the word "Daddy" refers to showing how innocent the character is and how it is easier for his wife to get him in control as he is innocent and naive so she can trap him easily. through out the poem Nagra uses phallic imagery as it says "your bananas are plantain" this sexual imagery is shown to create a sense of humor as when we think of bananas it then relates back to phallic imagery like the penis. He also uses sexual imagery again where it says"like we rowing through putney" the word 'putney' refers to the word puddi which is not an so romantic way to put it, he then again does this by purpose just too spice in a sense of humor. his wife is not presented as such a pleasant Indian wife as in many points in the poem she is described as an rebellious type of women who doesn't really go with the stereotype about how Indian women speak to elders with respect as "she egging at my mum" and "den stumble like a drunk making fun of my daddy" the first line shows how she has no respect for her mother in law and how disrespectful she is, due to her husband being naive and innocent maybe that is why she gets away with what she wants. This also shows negative effects towards her husband because if she loves her husband she would no treat her in laws in this way, gives a sign that maybe she is not that stereotypical Indian women you would expect from her. The same with her father in law she treats him in quite ghastly as who would make fun of their in laws. Then comes a point where it is written "above my head high heels tap di ground" When we think of heels we transmit it too someone who is working in an office or someone really posh, so this shows cleverness as office people tend to and are really clever .…

Hosseini purposely wrote the novel through first person narrative perspective as it gives the reader Amir’s personalized thoughts and feelings to early events that continuously affect his life. Amir’s childhood is filled with events and advice that he carries and somewhat haunts him throughout his life. The most crucial event with the most severe reverberation on Amir is Hassan’s rape. During this scene the reader feels as if they are Amir witnessing the rape as the author describes the setting through Amir’s ignorant and innocent twelve-year-old perspective. The first person narrative technique allows the reader to have an in depth insight to Amir’s horrified thoughts about the event and guilty feelings about running away instead of standing up for Hassan. His thoughts on what action to take are exposed and the reader see’s that Amir knows he has two options. Despite that he knows Hassan would help him if the situation were reversed, Amir chooses cowardice by running as it was easier than standing up for Hassan and accepting that he would be hurt by Assef. This paragraph is extremely powerful through first narrative style and…
