The Song You Got A Friend In Me By Randy Newman
The song You Got a Friend in Me by Randy Newman is a very famous song about friendship and it became even more popular after its appearance in the movie Toy Story. The lyrics read “You’ve got a friend in me.” This would describe the same bond which Jeremy, a 12 year old looking forward to being a teen, and Lizzy, a young lady whose mother left her when she was a year old, have with each other. In the story Lizzy helps Jeremy find the keys to a box which his father left for him. Lizzy spent her entire summer helping Jeremy find the keys when she could have been doing other fun and important things. In the book it states, “We’ll find a way to open the box,” Lizzy says decisively. “I promise.” This shows that Lizzy is willing and persistent …show more content…

i. am. One part of the lyric of the song is “Don't wait for luck, dedicate yourself and you gon' find yourself, Standing in the hall of fame.” The first part of the lyric is to not wait for things to happen, but make them happen. This relates to Jeremy Fink because Jeremy did not wait for luck to help him find all the keys at home or that they would just magically appear. He did not wait for others to look for the keys while he just enjoyed his summer. Jeremy dedicated himself to finding the keys and with the help of Lizzy, they opened the box on their own and found themselves in their own hall of fame. Another part of the song is “Do it for your pride, how are you ever gonna know if you never even try?” This part of the song explains that you have to be bold and try new things. In the story Jeremy doesn’t want to go on the bus. He states “I’m not proud of the fact that I’ve never taken public transportation without an adult, but everything I need is usually within walking distance.” This shows that Jeremy doesn’t like trying new things, but during the story Jeremy uses the train and the bus. By the end of the story he is taking the bus by himself when at the start of the story he didn’t like leaving the house. In the story Mrs. Fink asks Jeremy how he is getting to a place he wants to go and he replies “Bus. I have exact change.” By yourself? Lizzy …show more content…

Right off the bat this relates to Jeremy and Lizzy, two kids who have no other siblings. Both these 7th graders are missing a parent whom they desire to have back in their lives. Jeremy’s father passed away when he was only eight years old and Lizzy’s mother left her when she was a year old. It states in the song “It's been raining since you left me.” The line is talking about how life has been hard and kind of sad when you left me. This relates to Jeremy Fink because ever since his dad left life has been harder for him. Even when Jeremy tries to remember him he feels sad. In the book Mrs. Fink is talking about Mr. Fink and in Jeremy’s perspective it states “My eyes began to sting with the onset of tears, but I blink them away.” This shows that even five years after Mr. Fink’s death, Jeremy still misses him dearly and feels sad about it. Another lyrics is “Now your pictures that you left behind, Are just memories of a different life.” This relates to a part of the book when Jeremy talks about his dad. He states “Before he died he had moved on to fast food restaurant giveaways, which was great for me because he needed a kid in order to get the toys. Now I can’t go into a fast food place without feeling sad.” This is Jeremy remembering his life when his father was alive and how happy he was to go into fast food places. Like the lyric states “the pictures are a memory of a different life.” This

The poem tells the story of a young black girl exploring and experiencing what it is to become a black woman in her changing social circle. “it’s dropping food coloring in your eyes to make them blue and suffering their burn in silence. It’s popping a bleached white mophead over the kinks of your hair and primping in front of the mirrors that deny your reflection.” (Smith,9) The food coloring in her eyes, and the bleaching of her hair can only symbolize her need to grow into the more “accepted” form of society, the white skinned, blue eyed, blonde haired men…

Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not" all explain the deeper meaning of the poem. The metaphors project a message that means not all great things appear perfect when you get to know them better. The "blackberry" may stand for something lovely but it never remains lovely. The speaker uses "once off the bush" to explain that once the fruits are picked, the fruit will not remain the same. This could be a metaphor for anything in life once one takes advantage of something, then it will not last forever. By stating "I always felt like crying," the speaker shows that the event saddened and disappointed him and that he "hoped they'd keep, knew they would not" each year. This shows that as humans, we repeat ourselves or our actions even when we know the outcomes. Therefore, this shows that nothing can be perfect, last forever, or will always go our way. The similes "hard as a knot," "like a plate of eyes," and…

The film is a Homeric journey through Mississippi during the Depression--or rather, through all of the images of that time and place that have been trickling down through pop culture ever since. There are even walk-ons for characters inspired by Babyface Nelson and the blues singer Robert Johnson, who speaks of a crossroads soul-selling rendezvous with the devil.…

The “Reunion” is the shortest yet most powerful reading by far. In my own opinion, the biggest thing we as humans waste is sweet, sweet time. It is taken way too much for granted, and it seems that we only appreciate it when we’ve realized we’ve run out of it. The people you take for granted today may turn out to be the only ones you need tomorrow. As spoken in the lyrics of the Maccabees, “let’s make time work for us”, “because time can mean so much” (Maccabees).…

In the first stanza, the poet approaches the idea of a child forgiving their father for wrongdoing. The first line states, “How do we forgive our Fathers?” This line, being the same as the title, introduces the topic of the poem to the reader. In doing so, it suggests a father has traumatized his child through horrific events and the child does not know how to come to terms with it and find forgiveness in their heart. The poet continues the thought in the second line, which states, “Maybe in a dream.” These words imply that the child does not want to forgive their father since a dream is far from reality. Also, the child, not wanting to forgive his/her father, displays some of the anger he/she has toward their father. The third line states, “Do we forgive our Fathers for leaving us too often or forever.” Here, the child is hinting that one of the traumatic events he/she has endured is abandonment. The fourth line states, “when we were little?” This line simply adds details of the father’s absence and suggests that at an early adolescent age the child’s father abandoned him. The full stanza portrays a child filled with resentment and unsure of forgiving his/her father for disappearing from the child’s life at…

The first thing that comes to mind reading the story is the repeated usage of music and drugs. Since the story is set in the sixties, the music was changing – much like the attitudes and beliefs of the people. Drug use was becoming more common and accepted. Music was filled with lyrics of love, peace, and happiness. In even the second sentence, we see the significance of music as their radios “sang out love all day long” (90). As the story goes on, we learn more about how important to the story the music is. The father is a high-school music teacher and plays the clarinet in the basement, the mother sings to herself as she works in the house, and Bobby plays a harmonica. If someone in the house isn’t making their own music, they are listening to a record. Specific songs are placed strategically to aid the tone and setting of the story. The lyrics support the storyline and set the mood. People in real life use music as a distraction from their problems - it has been shown to decrease stress and calm people down. Drugs provide detachment from reality. They allow the user to feel good even in the harshest of times. This…

In this section of the story An-mei Hsu and Rose Hsu Jordan are at the beach trying to appease some fate controlling force to return Bing, An-mei’s son and Rose’s brother, to return after falling into the ocean. At this point in the story, the paragraph I have chosen, An-mei has given up hope, and Rose is infuriated at failing to help him. The song I chose for the scene was “Time In A Bottle” by Jim Croce. In the paragraph it describes how rose will never forget that moment, “My mother had a look on her face that I’ll never forget. It was one of complete despair and horror, for losing Bing.”…

Many times throughout the story he speaks of the people he has lost in his life and about how he once drove around the lake with them. He specifically speaks of two people, Sally and Max. He said, “Back in high school, at night, he had driven around and around it with Sally Kramer”. Sally Kramer was an ex-girlfriend he had before the war, who is now married, which marks an end to that relationship. He brings up his friend Max also, who drowned in the lake when they were younger. He says, “Before the war, they’d driven around the lake as friends, but now Max was just an idea”. Like the relationship he had that went nowhere, so is his life.…

As one listens to music of any genre, one typically hears but does not recognize the elegant use of poetic and literary devices used to make the music more alluring to the human ear. Different sound and literary devices are used to invoke and create different emotions within the listener. Many musicians enhance these techniques well and go on to successful careers although very few achieve fame. The Who is one such band that wrote many successful songs and was among the few, who properly utilized these techniques and went onto be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.…

It goes from something serious (or at least neutral) with “Sentimental Moment” to a (possibly) bad pun (“Why Did the Baguette Cross the Road?). This can show the poem in a sort of airy and humorous light, and may come off as some sort of “dad joke”. What a great juxtaposition of two different mindsets. It could also be a metaphor for the son growing older and drifting apart from his father, or “crossing the road.” His father wishes to help him to the other side, but he is already there.…
