to revolt against Spain trying to gain their independence but Spain violently shut down the revolt. When Cuba sunk the USS. Main in the Havana harbor the public demanded something to be done about the Spanish unexpectedly sinking the USS Main in Havana. On april 24th Spain declared war with the United States and on the 25th of april the United States declared war back with Spain. Spain by no means had an army or navy large enough to fight the us. Nor did they have one capable to fight a war with the united states on our land because they did not have a large enough navy for them to sail the distance to the United States. On May 1, 1898, the United States destroyed the entire Spanish fleet in a normal morning engagement. Only 7 American seamen were injured during the battle, no Americans were killed during the battle. The United States entering a war let alone helping another country gain its independence was pretty much un heard of at the time. The United up until Teddy Roosevelt stayed to its self and did not involve it's with anyone else.
The United States did this because that was what George Washington had said to do. Washington's idea was for the United States to not involve her self with anyone else so the Unites States would not get it's self into trouble. Teddy Roosevelt and his group of volunteer soldiers called the "rough riders' landed on the coast of Santiago and slowly advanced to destroy Cervera's troops. Cervera led his troops to escape the attack of July 3rd. The Spanish-American war was so short and had so little loss of life that most people don't remember or even recognize the Spanish-American war as a war in history because it was so short and meaningless. Teddy Roosevelt's foreign policy was to "carry a big stick but speak softly". Meaning build up a large army and navy to protect the United States if needed but don't instigate people and make yourself have to use it. Teddy Roosevelt's ultimate plan was to have a strong presence in international affairs when necessary for the United States to be involved. He would not get involved in anything and everything but he would when …show more content…
needed. He would build up the army and navy to be very big (the big stick), but he would not anger anyone or any country and would be respectful (speak softly).
So if someone were to want to attack the United States we would have a very large army and navy but they would not have been provoked by Roosevelt because he "spoke softly". After Roosevelt put in place his administration and new policies the United States got alot more imports and exports because we were involved and were helping the needs of oters in the foreign world. The United States started to get a good reputation with other countries because of it's involvment in the world's affairs. During the time of the United States' isolationism the import and export trade was not as high because the United States did not have that relationship with it's foregn neighbors so there was not that relationship or want to trade imports or exports with any
country. While the United States remained in isolation it did not see a need to build up a large army or navy so it remained vunurlable. The United States did not have a very strong government either. The United States was seen as a weak country and by no means a world super power.
