The Spectacular Now is a novel about an alcoholic small town teen named Sutter Keely who does not want a future who only want to live in the now and not worry about the consequences, but then he meets Aimee who is the complete opposite of him. The novel Happily Ever After is a companion to The Selection series, the novel has numerous short stories included based on the series. The novel offers stories told by different perspectives including The Price and The Guard. Did I Mention I Need You is the second book of the Did I Mention I Love You series; it continues the story about Tyler and Eden’s forbidden love. In the book it has been a year since Tyler left for New York, and Eden is finally going to be reunited with him. In the story the Prince Maxon struggles with the idea of love like everyone else. As Maxon does not have experience he questions if he is falling in love or is already. Before Maxon meet America he was close to another girl. He has always thought of her as a friend, but the night before Maxon started his selection she confessed to him her feelings. Maxon started to wonder if he loved her the way she loved him, if that was what love feels like. Many people at one point start to question if love even exists; Maxon is no exception. With Maxon’s selection comes the doubt of finding true love. Love is something that people cannot explain until they find it; there are different kinds of love. I personally can identify with Maxon. I have heard many theories and stories about love but I believe a person will know when they find it. Lastly I also believe when in love you will not have to question because you will

In the article "Homeland" by Anna Maria Dell'oso, the issue of identity; in particular, cultural identity, is thoroughly explored by the composer. It is mainly about how identity is passed on from generation to generation, changes over time and is influenced by a person's surroundings. The composer conveys this through her use of symbolism and sharp and often humourous contrast. It is about her search to find her Italian identity, while at the same time her mother loses some of her Italian identity because of changes influenced by time and surroundings.…

“Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid is a short story/poem was published in The New Yorker in 1978. There are many things that the story “Girl” shows us. One is the oppression of women and the lack of the options that women got. Another is the change in parenting techniques as orders like these wouldn’t be issued in today’s world. The narrator also shows how the gender role has grown since the late 1970s, shows the little girl protesting toward her mother, and shows the love a mother has for her daughter.…

“It is a sin to write this.” begins the story of Anthem. By the end of the story, Equality 7-2521 has a different moral assessment of his actions, but was the eventual assessment of his actions correct? His eventual evaluation being that of seeing this as a breaking of bonds with collectivity, an achievable freedom and disregard of the Council. In all terms, this judgment is correct, indifferent to the few flaws it may have. This can be proven through evidence from the book.…

Jealousy is the key factor that pushes us to do better or it can overpower our thinking abilities because we want to be the best, so we don’t think about how it can affect the people around us. This is exactly what happens in the story, “MVP,” by Clare Mishica. Derek wants to be the most valuable player on his basketball team instead of Cole so much that he forgets to be a team player. When Cole gets hurt, Derek realizes how much more important the trophy and being a part of the team is than getting MVP. Teamwork is always more efficient than trying to achieve something individually because a person can do very little alone, but together we can accomplish a lot. The saying, “Two heads are better than one,” goes along with this perfectly.…

We live in a country where television and advertisement is designed to entice people into always wanting more than what they already have. This enticement is achieved by feeding into the human desire for happiness. Advertisers create persuasive campaigns that inundate the public with images of societies narrow interpretation of success and beauty. These images are then presented as a precondition to the happiness that human beings are searching for. When a person’s reality does not match this narrow image, the message sent through television and advertisements is that in order to be content people need to find a way to acquire it. As a result we live in a society where people are continuously longing for a happiness that can only be achieved through things that are fleeting and external, which creates feelings of discontentment…

What is Love? Does anyone really know the meaning of the word? Does it have a different meaning to different people? In Kipnis’s essay “Love Labors”, Laura Kipnis touches on many different aspects of love. This is a touchy subject simply because love brings out many different opinions and beliefs. Kipnis argues over the fact that in order to have a good relationship and love someone people have to be able to meet certain requirements, which are mutuality, communication, and advanced intimacy.…

Language, Is it and art or is it a science? I will have to argue it’s a mix of both. Webster’s Dictionary defines Science as follows; A branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws. You must admit, it pretty much describes the study of any established language. Websters Dictionary also defines Art as follows; The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. Case closed! Language is a marriage of art and science whom, through many eons, have produced many children. They, the children, in reference to languages that have come and gone, have been both ugly and beautiful… but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or “ear” in this case.…

Everything people go through as they grow up is contributing to who they are going to be as they become older. Stress and traumatic experiences are always influencing who someone is becoming. The articles, “The surprising benefits of stress” and “A bit of stress may help young people build resilience” by Esther Landhuis show examples of how stress contributes to someone growing up. The book “Out of Nowhere” by Maria Padian also helps show how experiences contribute to who someone becomes. Our experiences really influence who we become as we grow up.…

In a life of poverty, illnesses surround its inhabitant. From poor nutrition to unfit living conditions come afflictions that range from a cough to polio. And as a society we preoccupy ourselves with the short comings of poverty. Creating a revolving door at hospitals treating the poor for their present illnesses, but paying no mind in preventing them for the future. In SAT," Ofri describes her experience as a doctor treating an impoverished unambitious young man, Nemesio Rios. Instead of just following up on Rios' routine check up, Ofri decides to prepare Rios for the SAT so that he could have a chance to go to college. For educational preparation is the preventative medicine for ones future well being because improving ones economical status increases their overall health. However, with Rios' situation Ofri recalled the image of a corpse she had seen long ago that reminded Ofri of Rios, which motivated Ofri to help Rio. But, with Rios being so lazy would he, when left alone, follow through with the SAT. Or where Ofri's efforts was just a tip of the iceberg? From this experience Orfi learned the much more important meaning of preventative medicine.…
