The Stereotypes Of Amish People
A Little Taste Of Amish

Abstract
The Amish are a very conservative community and are strong in their beliefs. The way that the Amish choose to live their lives has landed them with a few stereotypes and most of them being true, but they all hold reason behind them and don’t seem to have an effect on the way they live. Going into the community and seeing their lives first hand gave me a realization and showed me the reasons behind the way Amish live their lives. The Amish are normal people just like everyone else, their past and the way they live just make their lifestyles different than what we are used to.

They aren’t open with the “outside” world. This is what can sometimes cause people to think that the Amish live in their own world, and they kind of do. Their beliefs differ in so many ways than the way that we live today. The Amish don’t believe in vanity at all, they believe that taking recognizable pictures of them goes against the Bible so you will hardly ever see a photograph of them. (Carr, 2007) I personally know people who have spent hundreds of dollars to be photographed and I believe that the Amish would be completely appalled by such an action. Just by being around them you can get a good feel on how differently they …show more content…
I had even heard some people say that the Amish community was some kind of cult and once you are a part of it you can’t get out of it. So I asked Anna about it. She told me that she wasn’t sure why anyone would want to leave the community but it is something that can be done. (Anna, 2012) Even though you have some people leaving the community, Anna also talked about how the Amish community is continuing to grow and spread across the US. As you can see in the picture the Amish are not a scarce community. Like was stated before even though they are growing you still have people trying to get out of the community. Maybe you have even heard of the new reality show Breaking Amish, which is about young adults that have decided to leave their Amish lifestyles in their past and adventure out into the

The Amish culture teaches children and adults that they should be kind, nonaggressive, and respectful to others. The Amish do not receive money from the government, they are not allowed to participate in war, they don’t believe in material things, and they don’t believe in living in the city. The Amish do not use or have any electronics. They believe that you should feel blessed for what God gives you in life. They speak in a version of Pennsylvania Dutch. The Amish do not drive cars; their means of transportation is horse and buggy. In many people’s eyes, the Amish are strange and very different. As English men and women, we do not understand this way of life. We are used to and embrace all the modern conveniences. In the Amish culture, this simple way of life is normal and what they believe in. I think that this source is one of the best one I found on Amish culture for a research paper. It goes into great detail about what how the Amish live and what their value system is.…

The Amish culture is one of fascination and attracts tourist. “The Amish family is the foundation of the Amish way of life. The family structure and traditions that seem to be taken from a page out of history have remained an integral part of the Amish culture” (http://www.exploring-amish-country.com/amish-family.html) The Amish are mostly horticulturist, because they farm. They have been farmers for many years, but the growing number of Amish citizens has made them look elsewhere for finances. Amish people have a strong belief in god, which has set the path for some very strong values. Men are the main farmers, but women can and do help. Men handle the finances of the home, while women handle the cooking cleaning, and gardening. Children are educated through the eighth grade, and then learn the adult way in the Amish culture. Amish people vary a great deal from church to church or community to community. Some have cars, some use gas powered farming equipment, and some keep ties with family who leave the culture, while other do not. Even though Amish culture seems simple, it’s far more complicated than people know.…

I decided to choose the topic about Amish because I’m very curious about the Amish culture. I don’t think people understand how different the Amish live. Students who go to Ohio State University no idea what an Amish person looks like. My cousin takes pictures of horse and buggies to show them what is normal in our town. I live in the country, so therefore there are Amish people all around us. I never understood how they lived, or why they choose lived like that. I know that Amish people are humble people and they don’t ask for much in life. They work hard, have many children, go to church every Sunday, and many other normal things. But what happens when someone wants to leave the Amish community? This…

I was so surprised to see how they actually lived with no power, and using a horse and buggy to get around. They lived solely on the land and I have heard about how they lived like that but I have never seen people actually live on the land, and with no power. It is important to understand different cultures because you may insult someone with a different belief then you. I know that the Amish were insulted the way I was dressed when I got out of the car and they were talking about how I looked. I know they wanted to ask me to get back into my car, and they pulled their children away because I believe the children were interested in me by the way I looked and talked.…

There a lot of stereotypes those are commonly associated with Indians. Indians are all nerds and good at math, which is not necessarily true and I am an example. I have had people in the US assume that because I am Indian I must be good at math and I hate math. Indians eat curries everyday, which is again not true, India is a richly diverse country with a ton of different cuisines and not all of them include curry. Indians only speak “Hindu” actually Hindi and English is not very common, however on the contrary, most Indians speak English as it is taught in most schools and we have 20 different languages and many dialects apart from Hindi. Another common stereotype is all Indians have a funny accent like Apu from Simpsons and it surprises…

The old order Amish are an Anabaptist culture. This means the Amish believed in adult baptism instead of infant baptism like many other religions. According to Greska, there was a book found in many Amish homes describing how hundreds of Amish were brutally executed for their religious beliefs. Around 1693 the Amish separated themselves from the Mennonites because the Mennonites believed in shunning excommunicated members of the church. After the separation, the Amish traveled throughout many German speaking countries which lead to them speaking a German dialect. During the course of this paper I will discuss the key factors in the origin and organization of the Amish, and I will determine whether today’s Amish are true to the principles on…

The Amish is a group of men, women, and children who follow strict rules due to their religion. The origin of the Amish began in the year of 1517, with a man named Martin Luther. Martin Luther promoted church reformation and a new doctrine about the teachings of God. This caused numerous amounts of problems and led to the creation of the Anabaptists. Many years later, Jakob Amman’s actions, leaderships, and beliefs formed a new church, the Amish. The first group to immigrate to America was in the year of 1737. Today, the Amish still exists. The oldest group is the Older Order Amish. It has about 16,000-18,000 people located in the Lancaster Country. There are over 200,000 Amish people that live in more than 20 United States of America’s…

The United States is a unique nation in several ways, but there is especially one (fact) which fascinates me. And that is foreign people's interests and ideas about the American people. The diversity of ideas and meanings about the American people is astonishing, and the stereotypes are many. Some stereotypes are more commonly used than others and I have some theories about how they occurred. Because stereotypes in our days are the results of impressions, I will write what I believe are the sources to the stereotypes and if they are valid. I will use three of the stereotypes I believe are the most popular in our days, in order to illustrate my theories in this essay. I have chosen these stereotypes;…
