Rick//Richard- The main “protagonist”, although there is not an antagonist, is Richard. He is a short, middle-aged man who has recently opened a formal suit wear rental business in Utah after attending business school. His background is a combination of being born in Utah and being raised in Salt Lake Valley. His face was long, and narrow with straight, but tousled brown hair Richard’s character grows throughout the novel, behaviorally, not physically of course. The qualities that the character possesses are very similar to the author himself. Rick starts off as a very sophisticated, boastful, and confident “city man” who is devoted to making his business dream a reality. His behavior is naturally curious and he is very sneaky. By the end of the novel, Richard grows to become a family-oriented man who is compassionate and loving. He learns a lesson about Christmas that will stay with him for eternity. Richard is also very religious and spiritual, often looking to the universe for an answer.

The stone angel in his dream could have been a suggested allusion to a loved one flying freely in the heavens. In literal meaning, the stone angel was the angel that was displayed on top of Andrea’s grave in the cemetery that Rick saw on Christmas Eve. Later, the angel reappears in the end of the novel when Jenna makes Mary an angel at the hospital. The stone angel personifies Andrea’s spirit, even though Andrea herself is dead. It also symbolizes Mary’s faith and maternal love as she visited the statue in the cemetery every day. The stone angel symbolized Andrea, but by the end of the book, it began to represent Mary as a loving mother
