Book Review: on Isaac’s Storm This book is based on a true story where tragedies of the natural phenomenon, joined with limited technology and the arrogance of man that led to catastrophic results like deaths and disasters in Galveston, Texas. The book covers time periods of the 1900’s in which people were more concerned about reputation, money and conserving their career than people’s safety. In this time period the city of Galveston had been growing in the economy. The nation was overflowing its borders with optimism and confidence.…

The short story “The Storm,” is about a woman who attempts to conform to society’s norm of marriage, but discovers a different way to satisfy her sexual needs which in the end results in happiness and fulfillment. Chopin brilliantly revolves the story around a storm, hence the title. Literally, a storm means a disturbance of the normal condition of the atmosphere, manifested by an unusual force, which is exactly what she depicts throughout the story with the affair between Calixta and Alcee.…
Lauren Tarshis writes that storm chasers “are working to unravel the secrets of tornadoes.” When she says this she means that storm chasers work toward uncovering more information about tornadoes and their mysteries. Meteorologist can predict a variety of different types of weather, but tornadoes continue to stay a mystery. Even the most powerful radar cannot see a tornado that is hidden behind a ẅall of rain¨ (pg. 8).…
In any marriage, it is important for the wife to feel secured, loved, and to receive sexual gratification to maintain a strong commitment to her husband. Unfortunately, in Kate Chopin's "The Storm," Calixta does not receive all of these things from her husband Bobinot. Calixta's husband Bobinot lacks a sense of power and control in their marriage and also leaves her feeling sexually frustrated. Calixta's encounter with Alcee Laballiere also reminds her of her dull marriage and the passion her and Alcee has once shared. Because of the unfulfillment of her marriage to Bobinot, Calixta is driven to commit adultery with Alcee.…

The question was asked during class whether it would be accepted the other way around, and many of the guys said no. This is a perfect example of a double standard. Many men believe it is acceptable for men to do something wrong rather than the woman. In the story, I believe this was one of the many ways Chopin was trying to get her point across when it came to the women’s rights movement. Chopin was a strong supporter of women’s rights, and double standards played a big role during that time, especially sexually. It goes way back to the Salem witch trials with adultery. Women are always found especially wrong when committing adultery, infidelity, or any other sexually wrong act. In her story, when Calixta performs infidelity with Alcee, you see no regret or remorse during or after the deed. This was sure to spark debate during the women’s rights movement, and exampled within our class the perfect example of a double…
It's a fact, when talking on the subject of war, we presume that if the generals and country leaders didn't start them, they would by no means occur. In a book like Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger, though, there seems to be one more requirement, ready and enthusiastic soldiers. Junger would have probably preferred themselves "warriors" or barbarians. It's within this book that Ernst Junger tells the story of a man who describes and most likely believed that the battlefront of World War I was not a awful place to be, in fact that it was a quite magnificent place to be. Without a doubt, the reader can tell that Junger feels it was an honor to able to participate in Kaiser Wilhelm's war for the good of the Fatherland. Ernst Junger was simply an infantry fighter from World War I who never bent to the idea that the German army had been completely defeated and its crusade of conquest ending. He was injured numerous times, and still carried on and continued to fight armed and ready. Because of that perseverance in the name of the Fatherland and the glorification of his effort as portrayed in this book, it's obvious why it's a favorite in Nazi Germany.…
Her stories often deal with marriage and would provoke an unconventional perspective on the theme. “She forced her characters to face choices between what society expects of them and what they really desired” (Bonner Jr.). When the characters decided to follow their own path rather than that of society, it forces the reader to explore the problems and dilemmas that women face. “Chopin also is unafraid to suggest that sometimes women want sex -- or even independence” (Baker). Women accepted their roles forced upon them by society, even though a void in their inner selves longed to be filled. Chopin used her writings to put longings and feelings in written form on a page. The Awakening and “The Storm” opened an awareness that women and society needed to address and change for the better. Naturally, sexual feelings are something to embrace not confine. Putting restrictions on these feelings is not healthy and confines a woman to not blossom and grow. Letting a woman blossom would bring out the true beauty of her inner being. She also gave us a glimpse of possibilities when the decision of an adulterous affair is acted upon. No judgment or condemnation came from her writings. Kate did want to show that outcomes could have different collateral and consequential paths. No matter what decision has been made, the cause and effect implemented as soon as a decision has been reached. Either bad or good outcomes are one’s own personal choice. Every individual has to live with every decision acted upon. The consequences can lead an individual down a bittersweet path. To have the freedom or liberty of being one’s true self is worth the outcome. Every individual is unique and created to bloom from this uniqueness. People around us would not see the beauty the individual is meant to be unless we allow ourselves to bloom to…
“No finer death in all the world than…’ Anything to participate, not to have to stay at home.” This quote is an example of Junger’s view on the war. Does Storm of Steel Glorify War? Yes. Compared to other accounts of World War I, such as the film “All quiet on the Western Front,” Storm of Steel does seem to somewhat promote the war. Junger seems to glorify war by being a hero for participating in it. On the other hand, the film “All Quiet on the Western Front,” completely shows the was as a horrible thing, with a very sad and horrible ending.…
"The Storm" contains both dramatic and situational irony. Alcée takes shelter in Calixta's home as the storm begins. Bobinôt, Calixta's husband, and their son Bibi, are waiting the storm out at a local store. As the story progresses, Alcée and Calixta indulge in their attraction and lust for one another and find satisfaction in each other's flesh. On their way home, Bobinôt and Bibi stop just outside their house to clean the mud that collected on their pants and shoes because of the heavy rain. Bobinôt tells Bibi, "My! Bibi w'at will yo' mama say! You ought to be ashame," believing that Calixta is going to be angry with them for the mud on their clothes (Chopin 118). The narrator uses Bobinôt's concerns with entering the house dirty to introduce a twist of irony. "Then prepared for the worst, the meeting with an over scrupulous housewife, they enter cautiously at the back door (118). Instead being angry, Calixta was happy. She expressed happiness for their safe return and laughs so loudly that "anyone might have heard them as far away as Laballière's" (118). The house is already tainted by the affair between Calixta and Alcée. Therefore, Bobinôt and Bibi cannot make the house any dirtier than Calixta has. Calixta shows her lack of concern about her actions by laughing with her family. She laughs loud enough, according to Lawrence I. Berkove, that one can assume that she "intended for her laughter to carry to [Alcée's] house" giving hope to Alcée for further encounters and showing Calixta is…
“The Storm”, written by Kate Chopin in 1898, examines the uncontrollable desires of a young wife, lured into the arms of her past lover as her husband and son are caught in a storm. Bobinôt and four-year-old Bibi are running errands when the storm suddenly hit. Bobinôt’s wife, Calixta was at home sewing when she noticed the severe storm happening outside. When Calixta went outside to gather some clothing, her old lover Alcée asked for shelter during the storm. Through her use of symbolism, Chopin gives the reader her feelings on the love affair between Calixta and Alcée.…

In “The Storm,” Kate Chopin writes about a rekindling relationship between Calixta and Alcee. This short story is set in the late nineteenth century in Louisiana, and a large storm is developing. Calixta’s family, Bibi and Bobinot, are separated before the downpour, and Alcee’s wife, Clarisse, is in Biloxi along with their babies. Because a cascade is forming, Alcee asks if he could join Calixta until it was over. Of course, Calixta agrees being Alcee was her first love, and she did not want him harmed in the storm. While Calixta and Alcee are waiting for the storm to pass, the climax of the story occurs, which is them making love. The storm is then settled, and Alcee leaves just as Calixta’s family returns. The affair is hidden from their…
