Why the title continuity of parks? What parks and why continuity? What do you think he means with parks? A man reads a novel while enjoying the view of the park from his window. The story he is reading …show more content…
is about a man who is to be murdered by his wife’s lover. However, the setting becomes symbolic as the man reading the novel becomes also a victim of murder executed by his own wife’s lover. So, what seems like two different parks in the two stories actually ends up being the same park. Therefore, the title: Continuity of Parks. What is the plot? The story begins with an affluent entrepreneur reading a novel he had started reading a few days earlier in his house. He had not been able to start reading it due to business matters. He sits in a green velvet armchair with his back to the door while enjoying his cigarettes and the view of the park from his study window. He is infatuated by the novel, in which a man and woman meet in a cabin and they are lovers. They have plotted the murder of the woman’s husband with a knife. The woman goes north, and the man goes to her house. Armed with the knife, the man goes inside the house and sees his victim: a man who’s sitting in a green velvet armchair reading a novel. Does the lover kill the man, did he or didn't he kilo the man and why? The lover killed the man as they had agreed with the man’s wife. Though the story does not include how the man was killed, it is obvious that he was killed as the book he was reading was exactly the interpretation of what was going or rather what was about to happen to his life. When the lover creeps into the room where the man was reading the story, we realize that fiction and reality have merged together and that the reader has become a part of the fictional world in his book where the man was killed.
- Can we change the ending of the story to include how the man was killed? Basically, this story leaves the readers in suspense thus does not fully satisfy the curiosity of the reader. However, even if the story does not highlight how the man was killed, we are aware that the lover was armed with a dagger. Bearing this in mind we can speculate that the man was maybe stabbed to death. From this point of view, I think there is no need to change the ending of the story to include how the man was killed. We only need to think beyond the box ,after all, literature is all about analyzing the stories and coming up with suitable answers but not changing the actual story to provide desirable answers.
