The Story Of Iris And Demeter
The myth about Iris that I enjoyed was called Iris and Demeter. It is about the time when Hades’s with Zeus’s approval, kidnapped Demeter’s daughter Persephone and brought her to the underworld. When Demeter finally found out it was too late to save her daughter who already was turned into the queen of the dead. Demeter was so sad and upset that she stopped doing all of her duties and shape shifted into an old lady so that she could just spend her time crying. The crops died and the people on earth started to have a very hard life. Zeus sent Iris to Demeter with a message saying to focus back on the crops. Demeter ignored Iris and refused to listen. Unlike many other gods or goddesses, Iris was not born from a thigh, neck, or because of an interesting event. According to one source, Iris “was born in the mists of the sky just when the sun came out,” (rwaag.org 2002). Elektra “the amber” was a cloud nymph whose husband was Thaumas “the wondrous” marine god (Atsma 2015). Together, they gave birth to Iris and her sisters, the Harpies. The name Iris has a double meaning of “rainbow” and “messenger,” which explains why she was goddess of the rainbow who delivered messages for the gods to other gods and goddesses and even to mortals. As for her appearance, in one website, they state that “Iris appears in ancient Greek vase painting as a beautiful young woman with golden wings, a herald’s rod…

    Athena Role Model

Athena is one of the most well known goddesses from ancient Greece. She is Goddess of Wisdom and of War and is a good example of the template used for our modern day female superhero. Often called a feminist goddess, she is described as strong in both her character and body, independent and fierce, wise and rational. The story of Athena’s birth is well known. Zeus consumed the Titan goddess Metis and began to suffer a headache, Hephaestus then splits Zeus’ head open to relieve the ache and out of the wound sprung Athena. If you look close enough, Athena was born of man and woman asexually, but it was often said, even by Athena herself that she was born only of man. This course of action is a denial of the maternal origin and her mother is never seen in ancient myth as a disrespect. The denial of birth and female power to give birth commandeers this power and creates another layer of patriarchal views on the creation of life in the world. She belongs to only her father and sees herself as his greatest and most trusted heir. She was a part of the world in a way the women of her time were not allowed to be, a goddess of both war and wisdom, when the women in society were seen as irrational and unpredictable by the men around them. But she still remains a beacon of what a perfect women should be in their society, virginal, beautiful and loyally pledged to…

Martin Buber once said, “There are three principles in a man's being and life, the principle of thought, the principle of speech, and the principle of action”. If the idea of “thought”, “speech”, and “action” are so vital to one’s life, then not following an individual’s instincts nor taking any action to succeed in life results in conflict. These disputes can occur when individuals do not think straight and fail to realize there are consequences to their actions. Within Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, there are several factors that occur in the play that leads to conflict. For example, Juliet’s father, Capulet, arranges a wedding for her sooner than expected--even though she is secretly married to Romeo. In fact, conflicts are augmented in the play, especially when Romeo foreshadows his death as he fails to follow his instincts. In addition, Friar Lawrence foreshadows Romeo’s death since he predicts the outcome of their unwise marriage. Consequently, much of the conflict is created by Romeo and Juliet’s mutual outbursts, which is accentuated by the use of fire and celestial imagery. Ultimately, these avoidable disputes lead to their untimely demise.…
