The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
In Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the movie Fight Club there are two characters that reveal the two sides that every human has. There is a "good side" and there is a "bad side." In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll, who believes humans are born with two sides, creates a chemical to separate his "bad side," Mr. Hyde, from his "good side." In Fight Club the narrator, Edward Norton's character, developed a psychological disease, which inadvertently forced out his "bad side," Tyler Durden. Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden not only have many physical and mental differences, but there also exists many definite similarities as well. Although they both come about from different reasons they share extremely close qualities also and to the point where they almost reflect each other. They both have one common goal and that is to satisfy themselves and no one else.

Where differences are concerned Tyler Durden is good looking and virile whereas Mr. Hyde is hideous and like Satan. Also, Tyler Durden was unknowingly brought about by Jack's psychological disease and it was a chemical that Dr. Jekyll took which brought forth Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll created the chemical in order to separate himself, the "good side," from Mr. Hyde, the "bad side." Tyler Durden was part of Edward Norton's character; he was in his subconscious while Mr. Hyde was conscious.

As far as similarities go both Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden have no conscience. They do not think about anyone other than themselves. They do consider the consequences of their actions and act only to satisfy them. In Fight Club Tyler Durden states, "It's not until you lose everything that you are free to do anything" (Fight Club). Both Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden have nothing to lose. They can do anything that they want. They feel joy when hurting others and damaging houses. It is like a game that they must win. They tear through society without a care in the world not thinking to consider anyone's feelings but their own. Fear is not an object to either Mr. Hyde or Tyler Durden. It is as if they are young children who believe that they are invincible; they do not yet know how society expects them to act.

Also, both Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden hurt people and damage houses. In Fight Club Tyler Durden states, "Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing" (Fight Club). They are not hurting themselves so it make no difference to them what the consequences are because they will not face them like a typical human in society would. They will flee when the consequences hit and everyone but them will suffer. They feel that they are the center of the universe and may do whatever they please as long as it brings some sort of pleasure to them. As many young children, they do not know how to be "good" or respectful of others and their society around them.

In addition, Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden were both killed. Mr. Hyde killed himself after Dr. Jekyll lost control of him. He committed suicide in order to save himself so he would not have to face the consequences of his actions. Tyler Durden, on the other hand, was murdered. Edward Norton's character killed him to attempt to stop the damage to society that he created. Once Mr. Hyde committed suicide he was not able to damage society any longer. Good prevailed and society was no longer in danger of the evil Mr. Hyde. However, even though Edward Norton's character murdered Tyler Durden his legacy continued to live on without him. Society was still in danger even after the existence of Tyler Durden. Buildings still exploded and people were still in danger even though Tyler was not around to cause it. Tyler Durden planned for buildings to blow up even after he was gone. As determined, as Edward Norton's character was Tyler Durden, the "bad side" still prevailed.

Furthermore, Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden both come out of suppression. They are not coming out of good situations. Mr. Hyde came about by Dr. Jekyll wanting to separate from him. He wanted to take his "bad side" and put it into something else so he could be "good" and pure. Dr. Jekyll wanted to keep only his "good side," but his plan backfired on him. Mr. Hyde became his "bad side" as he wanted, however, Dr. Jekyll was not only "good" and pure, but he still possessed his "bad side" as well. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Dr. Jekyll states, "With every day, and from both sides of my intelligence, the moral and the intellectual, I thus drew steadily nearer to the truth, by whose partial discovery I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck: that man is not truly one, but truly two" (43). Dr. Jekyll realizes that all humans have to faces to them. It is impossible to fully be rid of the "bad side" of any human; the "good side" can only attempt to cover it up.

Also, Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden are the people that Dr. Jekyll and Edward Norton's character not only are suppressing but also want to be. In Fight Club Tyler Durden tells Edward Norton's character, "All the ways you wish you could be, that's me. I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not" (Fight Club). However, both Dr. Jekyll and Edward Norton's character know that they cannot possibly act as Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden because they know that it is not acceptable in society.

Mr. Hyde and Tyler Durden are so alike that they almost completely reflect themselves. They are both suppressed "bad sides." They are nothing but bad news. They do what they want, when they want, however they may want and nothing is going to stand in their way. They are not afraid to hurt anyone or damage anything as long as they reach their goal. Their way goes and if you do not like it then get out of their way. They may look physically different and have mental differences as well, but they are tremendously similar in their ways.

In the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, although Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde are of the same body, they have completely different personalities, as well as completely different physical appearances. While Dr. Jekyll “‘is a tall fine build of a man” (Stevenson 45), Mr. Hyde is described as “pale and dwarfish” (19). This contrasts the stature of both men. Dr. Jekyll is written to be tall, and Mr. Hyde short. The author writes Dr. Jekyll as having a “large handsome face” (24), yet creates a grotesque image for Mr. Hyde by giving him “an impression of deformity” (19) and “a displeasing smile” (19). These two men are written to be extremely different, not only in nature and appearance, but also…

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is perhaps the purest example in English literature of the use of the double convention to represent the duality of human nature. That Dr. Jekyll represents the conventional and socially acceptable personality and Mr. Hyde the uninhibited and criminal self is the most obvious aspect of Stevenson’s story. The final chapter, which presents Jekyll’s full statement of the case, makes this theme explicit. In this chapter, Jekyll fully explains, though he does not use the Freudian terminology, that what he has achieved is a split between the id and the superego.…

Throughout Fight Club the audience becomes acquainted with two characters: the narrator with the self referenced name of Joe, and his best friend Tyler Durden. With their first meeting, Joe was enamoured with Tyler. From his poetically spun words to the the unthinkable barbaric actions his thoughts eventually led up to, Joe soon wasn’t just a friend, but a captive to the mind of Tyler Durden. Throughout the story Joe compulsively follows Tyler’s wishes, eventually not able to run away from his friend, eternally caught in the web of obedience. Joe once said that “The cancer I don’t have is everywhere now.” What he didn’t realize is that that cancer that he could not see, was Tyler Durden slowly growing from him. However, when they searched the room, they were not able to find another way that Dr. Jekyll could have escaped. They did not find Dr. Jekyll. The concept of duality in Jekyll and Hyde is interesting because Jekyll is Hyde, the good is the evil, and Jekyll knows that inside him is something terrible and, although he tries to control it, he knows that the evil in him will come out and he will be left in the passenger seat, watching. This is further shown in the way that Stevenson presents Hyde; Hyde is smaller than Jekyll, he is broad and hairy and rather short and Jekyll’s clothes do not fit him. This suggests that the evil side of Jekyll is smaller than his good side and can be controlled. The relationship between Jekyll and Hyde is also interesting; Stevenson relates it to the relationship between a father and a son. He writes ‘Jekyll has more of a father’s interest; and Hyde more than a son’s indifference’. This is a strange notion because Jekyll knows that Hyde is evil and yet he still has a close relationship, this is possibly because in Hyde Jekyll sees some of himself, all of his desires and urges that he has suppressed to fit in with middle class life in London, he realises that he is Hyde, and that to destroy Hyde he must first destroy himself, and I think he decides that he can live with Jekyll and is very distressed when his drugs work less and less effectively and he realises that in time they will stop working all together and he will lose what is his good side and become what he fears the most, the…

Every person has the ability to kill another. Thought the statement may seem harsh and untrue, a deeper look into one's carnal instincts would prove the claim to be correct. Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, published in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson, is about a man who transforms between the two personae: Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde. Dr. Jekyll was the front runner and sawn to be polite and overall a moral person and Mr. Hyde, his deformed and polar opposite side. The book is a critic at the hypocrisy of society in the way it shuns the duality of humanity but continues to promote it in political policies. Dr. Jekyll's and Mr. Hyde's personas portray the idea that people are born with the desire to do "heinous" acts and most…

Not everyone is perfect. We all have weaknesses and character flaws. Some people drink too much; others smoking or spending too much money. Many people lead a seemingly moral and righteous life, but have secret, dark thoughts or desires. Mr. Hyde has all these flaws and he flaunted them openly. Actually, when you examine his character on a deeper level, the “respectable” Dr. Jekyll is actually and deeply flawed and immoral character. Mr. Hyde is just another part of him, his immoral subconscious, who, because he is given free reign, does the immoral things that Dr. Jekyll couldn’t do because of his reputation. The greatest flaw that Dr. Jekyll has starts with the incident in his laboratory. He experiments with chemicals and discovers another side of himself. Stevenson characterizes Dr. Jekyll as a desperate man dependent on his symbolic drug to escape the moral confines of Victorian society.…

Robert Louis Stevenson is a very elusive writer in that he both hints and broadly tells you that he believes that all man has a double side. This is self evident in the generally evil Mr. Edward Hyde and the antonym Dr. Henry Jekyll. He was not secretive in informing the reader of this dual side as seen by the physical acts and attitudes of both Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll, and there are also the expressions of Dr. Jekyll in his explanation of the series of events about Mr. Hyde's origin.…

Jean-Paul Sartre writes, in his essay, "Existentialism", that an individual's responsibility extends not only to him or herself, but also to all of humanity. He believes that we must take this into account for every decision we make. This extra accountability can cause distress for an individual because of the pressure that it brings. In Lorraine Hansberry's play, Les Blancs, Tshembe is faced with an important decision that will not only affect his own life, but the lives of his whole nation. Although none of Tshembe's decisions are without struggle, and irresolution, he reacts to the controversy before him by making choices in accordance with Sartre's definition of "good faith," despite the anguish it causes him.…

These real life monsters really come into play when something tragic has happened early in their life or they just become mentally ill. “I feel thrilled and excited when I do it. I just keep having the desire to do it because of the way it makes me feel”. This quote is from an interview with Ted bundy before his death. Serial killers are kind of like frankenstein when you talk about their childhood and upbringing through life. In some cases some serial killers might even say that they are helping society because they are getting rid of all the “bad” people. On the other hand some serial killers are like Jekyll and Dr. Hyde because of the way they can live two lives. In the novel, Jekyll and Dr. Hyde switch their mood and personality when they don’t get what they want and that’s the same case for serial killers except the fact that they will kill innocent…

Jekyll also says that Hyde is “less developed, much less exercised and much less exhausted”. Hyde was weaker than Jekyll but later on he develops and starts to take over the control. “At that time my virtue slumbered; my evil, kept awake by ambition, was alert and swift to seize the occasion” hyde was doing more and more evil things and Jekyll felt so ashamed that he couldn’t cope with this anymore. Other people disliked or hated Hyde even more that some of them wanted to kill him “Every time he looked at my prisoner, I saw the sawbones turned sick and white with desire to kill him”. People wanted to kill him because he shows what they hated the most, evil. They have seen no good in him at all. It caused them to feel like that because sins like gambling or drinking were very unacceptable in their society and nobody wanted others to found out about this. But Hyde could not show any good. That provoked people the most to want to get rid of him. As Mr Enfield said “It wasn’t like a man; it was like some damned Juggernaut” people’s impression on Hyde looked like that since they first saw him.”Well we screwed him up to hundred pounds” Enfield blackmailed Hyde when he trampled over little girl. He said if Hyde will not give a hundred pounds to the girl’s familly he will tell local people about that…

Jekyll desire to be accepted in society transforms into a wanting to dissect and separate the evil from himself and add that evil into another persona of his being; a desire that has been repressed for a long time. Dr. Jekyll’s reasoning for another being of himself to exist was because of the morbid sense of shame that he felt for the desires that lie deep within him (103). Dr. Jekyll did not want others to know of the thoughts that he had on the other side of his personality. He knew of the good and ill that was divided in him and couldn’t help it any longer than to let the ill of his spirit break free (104). Dr. Jekyll had the knowledge of the good and evil that resides in every person’s soul; no longer could he allow the desire of his other half eat away at the good that was left. Dr. Jekyll as Mr. Hyde was the only way that his desires of fulfilling the evil within him could be satisfied. Through the separate and secret creation of Dr. Jekyll’s alter ego, he still had the ability to fit into society like every other person. Mr. Hyde takes away the unacceptable behaviors that society frowns upon. A strive for perfection is sustained in these…
