As of now, we only have two different democratic representation models: trustee and delegate. The trustee model says that representatives should be allowed to use their own judgment when deciding upon how they will vote on particular legislation. A trustee tries to lead his/her constituents, rather than follow them. Trustees are willing to run the risk of losing re-election if that means voting for the right thing, and I respect that.…
The United States’ form of government is a controversial topic in this modern era and has been for decades. The big question “Is the United States a democracy, a republic or something else?” According to the article On Democracy in Our Republic by an unknown author, there is a logically reinforced thesis that the United States is a republic and not a democracy.…

The emergence of democracy would change the United States forever. Our country today wouldn’t be what it is today without democracy in place. During the 1820s-1850s democracy truly started to appear in the nation. With ideas of every man should be equal and the uprising of the abolition movements. Women didn’t keep their thoughts out of it either. In 1828 President Jackson was elected and with this he brought the idea of everyman should be equal. He also believed in that whatever he wanted, he would get and take it by any means. Also during this time abolitionist started voicing their ideas about how there should be no slavery and that all slaves are on an equal level as the white man. Woman also felt this was the perfect time to voice their opinion as well. Not all women but some felt like they were being pushed to the side and not even looked at for any decision. The women started protests and took legal action on this and fought for their right to be acknowledged in the social and political society. All these events helped develop democracy.…
I will discuss the concept of a Republic, also known as a Representative Democracy. The Openstax American Government textbook describes a Democracy as a political system in which people govern themselves (pg. 8). This system can come in the form of a Representative Democracy or a Direct Democracy. Direct Democracies are ones in which the citizens themselves participate directly in making laws (pg. 14). This type of government occurred in Ancient Athens. The United States Government, on the other hand, comes in the Representative Democracy form. This means that, instead of directly creating laws, the citizens choose representatives that do this for them (pg. 13). President Donald Trump is now one of those representatives. His job is to represent…
As the democratic government began to evolve and take form, the idea of representation started to shift towards one where the demands of citizens came to be known. Today, representatives are seen as people whom citizens’ trust in speaking on their behalf. However, the two types of representation may have an effect on which representative constituents elect. The two types of representation, agency and descriptive, help define how constituents ensure that their interests are displayed in Congress. Even with agency representation being the majority type of representation of Congress, constituents are fairly represented by their representatives in the legislature.…
Obviously, it is difficult to keep track of a representatives every move in the deep dark chamber of congress[Doc G]. In some congress people’s opinion, this anonymity leads them to believe that they don’t have any responsibility to their constituents. This is a classic example a a psychological phenomenon called groupthink, in which anonymity provides a cover for risky and generally worse decision. But, because of the anonymity and the feeling of a responsibility to political parties, the central goal of a legislator can be skewed. A solution to this problem could be the increasing involvement people in the processes of democracy[Doc D]. This should also be the goal of the congress people, not ties to an established political party or group. The people need to be constantly engaged in the processes of their democracy, not only the presidential election. Politicians have to be elected consistently, this should not be intertwined with getting in the favor of political organizations they are associated with [Doc C]. Establishing a role to the people, and the people a role creates a system beneficial for everyone involved. Then political election will be the result of what policy they make, and what policies people vote…

Unlike Mill, Madison states that representatives should be primarily focused on local knowledge as it pertains to commerce, taxation, and the militia (Hamilton 360); it is neither probable nor necessary to know everything about their constituents. The function of the House, Madison argues, is not to advocate for local concerns. Instead, the purpose of representatives is to bring relevant local information into legislative discussion to better enable the House to make decisions that will benefit the nation as a…
When the Founding Fathers began designing America’s government in 1787, one of their greatest fears was the possibility of the dumb majority using their power to pass uneducated and disastrous legislature. They feared “the mob”, the everyday citizens that had little schooling and knew almost nothing about politics. To avoid giving the voters too much power, a Representative-Democracy style government was created, a system where citizens would vote for a person or group to represent them in making legislature. Referendum votes bypass the politicians and ask for the people’s opinion directly- they are direct votes where the entire country is invited to vote on an issue, which give the people a chance for their voices to be heard. While a good…
The constitution was established by men who had experienced the dictatorships of Europe and had escaped from its grasp. They sought to establish a form of government that would never allow a dictatorship or tyrant ruler to hold power over the people like in the places they had fled. With their creation of the foundation of what our government is today they created a system where 3 branches were all of equal power and each could be overruled by another which prevented any branch becoming superior of another. The separation of powers provides a system of shared power called Checks and Balances.(2) The three branches are legislative, judicial and executive and they each have specific powers to balance those of the other branches. The Legislative branch is made up of the House and Senate. The Executive branch is made of the President, Vice-President, and the Departments. The Judicial branch is made of the Federal courts and the Supreme Court. Each of these branches has certain powers, and each of these powers is limited, or checked, by the other two branches. By forcing the three branches to be monitored by the others, no one branch can gain enough power to become superior over the others. The American Governments system of being divided into 3 branches that can restrain one another is the most efficient way to govern the U.S. in a fair manner and without any branch becoming more powerful than another.…
In the beginning of the chapter, we are told what is power, in the political sense, and who has the authority to use it. There are two different understandings of democracy: direct democracy (the rule of many) and representative democracy. The US government uses representative democracy, everyone is given their own power, even if it's as minimal as voting for a leader to represent you. The Framers of the Constitution believed a direct democracy would lead to people following the popular opinion instead of the common good for the nation.…
