1 Introduction
This report will evaluate and analyse HSBC to assess its suitability as a potential career option for UoL undergraduates. This report will present in a business report format and appropriate information both on the company itself and in relation to how the organisation recruits and develops the graduates. The report will conclude with appropriate recommendations that may provide guidance to fellow undergraduates in their career planning.
2 Backgrounds
HSBC was born from one small idea – a local bank providing an international service. In March 1865 HSBC opened its doors for business in Hong Kong and today it connects customers all across the globe.
HSBC is one of the four major clearing banks in the UK, a wholly owned subsidiary of HSBC Holdings. Business ranges from the traditional High Street roles of personal finance and commercial banking, private banking, consumer finance, and corporate and investment banking business. In all brands of banks operating in the UK 1800 sites (HSBC, 2012).
The headquarters of UK HSBC Bank are at HSBC Tower in the Canary Wharf area of East London. This building is the headquarters of the HSBC Group, to accommodate about 8,000 employees, more than 42 levels.
HSBC is only one of British big 5 banks hold more deposits than loans (loan: deposit ratio of 90%). This has led to the bank to be seen as a low-risk proposition than other investors and customers of the bank fund, because it is its own operation. This also led to the company 's share price in increasing the value of the credit crunch, unlike other banks in the market (HSBC, 2012).
HSBC Global Banking and Markets is the investment-banking arm of HSBC Holdings. HSBC has shifted its attention away from the saturated European and US markets towards the emerging markets in the east. The investment banking division changed its name to HSBC Global Businesses in 2008 to align with
