2. If you were on a ship at sea, and a tsunami passed under your ship, what would probably be your reaction? Explain.…
Known as one of the worst disasters in the world's history, the Boxing day tsunami took place on December 26, 2004. The tsunami destroyed over 12 different countries and islands, including Sumatra, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and many more located by the Indian ocean. It had continued trekking countries in the Indian Ocean for over two days and left a devastating mess(Malcolm Moore and Meabh Ritchie). The only good that might have come from this terrible day in history was more knowledge about this disaster and better preparation for more to come.…
As early as 426 B.C.[->1] the Greek[->2] historian Thucydides[->3] inquired in his book History of the Peloponnesian War[->4] about the causes of tsunami, and was the first to argue that ocean earthquakes must be the cause.[5]HYPERLINK \l "cite_note-Smid.2C_T._C._103f.-5"[6]…

2)The Largest and most dangerous of oceanic waves is called tsunami or tidal waves. It’s wave could reach up to thousands of feet tall. 3)Tsunami is word originated from japan, and it’s equivalent in English is called “seismic sea waves.” There are many factors causing Tsunami. Most tsunamis that has…
The effects of tsunami include damage of properties, the death of humans, serious flooding and diseases.…
The text “Killer Waves: How Tsunamis Changed History” by Becky Oskin is suggesting the tsunami in the 15th century transformed the people’s societies with culture transitions, circumstantial increase/decrease in trade/interaction, and the migration away from the coast. With food sources destroyed, societal changes had to be made in order to survive. The societal changes created a shift in culture, resulting in the Maori people to have a larger warrior based culture, to protect the remaining resources they have left. Another example of cultural changes after tsunamis would be the increase in intellectuality, the various of the current philosopher’s referenced the wave.…
Cause: The Cause of the Tsunami was because of a 9.3 earthquake. The earthquake was caused because of the collision of the Indian Plate and Burma plate. The Indian plate actually slipped under the Burma plate because of a fault line.…
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake the strongest ever recorded struck the East coast of northern Japan. It Japan triggered a massive tsunami along the Pacific Coast of northeastern Japan. As a result over 20000 people were killed and the Fukushima Daichi nuclear reactor has been severely damaged so Low-levels of radiation have been emitted.…
This is caused by shallow-focus underwater earthquake; volcanic eruption and large land slide into the sea. The displacement of the water becomes the giant sea wave and they normally have a long wavelength over 100m and low wave height when they are still in the open ocean. When it approaches shallower water near the shoreline the speed and the height increases and it can reach 700km/h. tsunami is one of the most deadly seismic hazards can cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a savage tsunami. It killed over 15000 people and the total cost of the disaster was over $300billion and Japan is still recovering today.…
As a member of the government Disaster Management Task Force, a geographical report has been required to be written which analyses the impact of two natural disasters and evaluates which was the most severe. The two chosen natural disasters includes the 2011 Japanese tsunami/earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Disaster 1 – Japanese Tsunami and Earthquake On Friday the 11th of March 2011, a magnitude 9.0 Earthquake struck coastal waters, along a subduction zone, surrounding Japanese islands. At the time of the Earthquake, no one expected what was about to occur, one of the most devastating tsunamis to have ever hit Japan.…
It was a serene Sunday in Banda Aceh, Indonesia when a substantial earthquake measuring around 8-9 on the Richter scale devastated the Indian Ocean region. The quake started at approximately 8:25 a.m. and lasted a prolonged seven minutes. The sea level drastically subsided and residents of the Banda Aceh began collecting fish that were exposed on the beach due to the change in sea level. At this time, in Banda Aceh, it was now 9 a.m., and Banda Aceh was not as peaceful. Overwhelming waves began to demolish homes and businesses on the shore as well as violently carry away pedestrians. Dead bodies, collapsed buildings, and a layer of mud nearly a foot thick accumulated on the shoreline after the tsunami struck. (After the Tsunamis). After twenty minutes of chaos, the lives of the residents as well as the tourists encompassing the Indian Ocean Region including Banda Aceh would be changed forever. The Boxing Day tsunami had numerous detrimental effects such on people, property, and the environment which ultimately raised tsunami awareness around the Indian Ocean region.…
But this was very unusually for a tsunami to happen after an earthquake that only had a magnitude of 7.0 because they usually need to be much bigger to create killer waves. A team of scientists discovered that the tsunami had two types of waves, tectonic and landslide-generated tsunamis, the only one that caused fatalities was the landslide tsunami, killed a man and two boys. Haiti didn’t have any warnings or education for tsunamis at the time, they since then have been teaching the public what to do during tsunamis and…
A total of 30,828 landslides were triggered from the earthquake with 29 700 000 m3 of dirt being displaced (Xu et al., 2014). The earthquake also trigged a tsunami, with waves reaching 3m in height that destroyed several buildings and killed 3 people (Dell’Amore et al., 2010). The tsunami was unexpected due to the type of earthquake that had occurred. The earthquake was a strike slip earthquake which means the plates slipped horizontally against one another, which normally wouldn’t cause a tsunami due to there being no vertical movement of the plates, which is needed to create tsunamis. A current theory for the cause of the tsunami is multiple underwater landslides (Lovett, 2010).…
To continue, earthquakes are more dangerous than hurricanes because they can cause major water related issues. In "Earthquakes: effects" it states that when a earthquake breaks a dam or levee along a river, "the water from the river or reservoir floods the area, damaging buildings and sweeping away or drowning people,'" (paragrph 11). This determines that earthquakes can cause many things to malfunction, leading to destruction. Imagine that you have a house along a large river. If an earthquake were to suddenly occur, the flooding may become so powerful that it could sweep your house away! Located in the same article, it continues, "the earthquake from Alaska on March 28th, 1964 caused shock waves that were so powerful that bodies of water…
