The yin yang symbol originally came from China. The very first time that this symbol was mentioned was in “I Ching.” I Ching is an ancient Chinese manual of prophecy also known as The Book of Change (“Taijitu,” n.p.). The title of the book is I Ching because in Chinese I has the meaning of change, and ching means books. This book views all of the changes that the world goes through and provides a teaching about how to understand life. The I Ching originated from a period of about 700 to 1000 years before Christ. Yin Yang can be defined as, “the nature of changed balanced as two halves of a whole” ( “Taijitu,” n.p.). Both of the words yin and yang mean separate things. For instance yin essentially means “shady side,” while on the other hand yang means “sunny side” (“Taijitu,” n.p.). This symbol principally means the concept of dualism forming into a whole. For example we encounter dualism each and every day such as: night and day, or male and female. They represent the opposite ends of a cycle, and cannot exist without each other.
