The Taxi Ride
I’ve decided to base my Oral Presentation on “The Taxi Ride” (by P.E.R.) on the main character and on some of her characteristics. My presentation will try to focus on a sort of recapitulation of the reasons Helen Jones’ life appears to be significantly praiseworthy. Having so much to grief about, Helen’s behaviour was commendable since she was loving in all her roles (as a mother, as a wife, as a grandmother, as a housewife) and, despite her routinary life, she would not complain but keep her pains to herself and try to make the best of such difficult situation. The purpose of this OP is to explore these characteristics and to establish a connection between them and the reason I think this makes her attitude towards life seem laudable.

To prove my point, I’m going to briefly summarize the characteristics that are related to each of her roles in life and to how she’s portrayed as an applaudable woman.

As it can be seen in the short story, Helen Jones had many roles in her life, all of which were carried out successfully by this elderly woman. As you all know Helen was not only a wife, but also a mother, a grandmother and a housewife. As a wife, Helen was seriously committed to her wedding vows. Despite Jimmy’s health, as Helen had promised to be there for him in sickness and in health, it never crossed her mind to abandon him when they learnt he had such a serious disease as sugar diabetes is. On the contrary, Helen led an impeccable life in which she was a companion and a nurse to Jimmy. As a loving wife, this job was easy for her, but as an elderly woman it created great difficulties for her since she did not get to rest as much as she needed and had to continually make physical efforts in order to care for Jimmy. As a mother, Helen was always concerned with what her children were going through. Since Lance would not trust her with his problems, Helen would always have him on her mind; she would be preoccupied for his son and for whatever issues were

Her attitude towards her mother shows a lack of empathy and an uncaring personality. I was surprised when I saw her concern for her son, but her character seems more worried about his education than his wellbeing. She joins the opposing side of Roberta’s protest just to go against her. This woman is obviously hurt and shows slight sociopathic tendencies. Reading from her unreliable point of view is intriguing and opens the story for questions and discussions.…

The main problem with Helen 's relationship with her family and kids her age was misunderstanding. Neither her parents nor other children understood her. The Keller 's would not discipline her, they would rather keep her spoiled than to tolerate her rowdiness. Her parents felt pity for her, therefore she could not express herself, hear or see so they tolerated all her tantrums. The children also did not understand her; they were petrified of her. Helen would hit them when she wanted something. The children did not understand her when she asked for something in sign language and since she also did not understand why they did not comprehend her, she got frustrated to the point that she would beat…

Helen Keller’s, “The Story of My Life” is a look of her early life and how she remembers it. She describes how she became blind and deaf, her early life, her family, and how she communicated despite her disabilities. Although she was timid about writing her life story, she becomes very creative and more open as she grows older and writes more of her story. Even though she can remember very little of things she saw and heard, she describes everything in much detail.…

Keller's story is also a member of the genre of disability autobiographies in which the writing of one's life story takes on the characteristics of what the philosopher J.L. Austin called "performative" utterances: The primary function of The Story of My Life, in this sense, is to let readers know that its author is capable of telling the story of her life. The point is hardly a trivial one. Helen Keller was dogged nearly all her life by the charge that she was little more than a ventriloquist's dummy--a mouthpiece for Anne Sullivan, or, later, for the original editor of The Story of My Life, the socialist literary critic John Macy, who married Sullivan in 1905. And even for those who know better than to see Helen Keller as disability's Charlie McCarthy, her education and her astonishing facility with languages nevertheless raise troubling and fascinating questions about subjectivity, individuality and language. Roger Shattuck and Dorothy…

One theme that Helen Keller offers in her story is about Perseverance and Determination. She develops this theme because in her story she did go through a major change in her life. The impact and lessons readers took away from The Story of My Life is the value of perseverance. Without the ability to see or hear, Keller learned to function and interact within the community in a meaningful and healthy way. Her motivation, commitment, and determination to make a place for herself in the world started when she was very young. Even as a child, she found ways to help her mother around the house, rather than stay in a world that was dark, silent, and lonely. In fact, the terrible fits for which she is well remembered from was the most enormous frustration…
