The Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allen Poe

The Dream Tale In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Edgar Allen Poe illustrates the narrator's murder of an old man. The narrator is confessing his doing about how he has gone out of his way to evade and disturb the old man until he decided it was his time. After completing the perfect crime his conscience begins to eat away at him through what sounds like the beating of the old man's heart. As the story continues Poe makes the reader think that everything the narrator is doing is to be believed. Throughout the story Poe makes references that the narrator's actions really did take place, but nevertheless also includes inconvenient details that do not add up. Everything that the narrator does seems to be for a reason, but his sense of time and abnormal actions clarify the narrator's murder as a dream or illusion in his head. The narrator admits his disease in the story that he believes is not harming him, but actually is intensifying his ability’s. He explains that his disease enhanced his senses in a way that some could only feel in their dreams. In the story the narrator explains that “[He] heard all things
From the middle to the end he seemed to have extreme patients, luck, and able to accomplish tasks fairly fast with no error. From standing in the old mans room for long periods of time to cleaning up the murder with the luck of the police showing up after he was done is hard to believe. The little detail he used for his cleanup is a example of what happens in dreams when you jump from one thing to the other. His detail for cleaning up was that “[He] dismembered the corpse. [He] cut off the head and the arms and the legs”(Poe). This was a lot to accomplish in the little time he had for police to respond. How unlikely is it that they arrived as soon as he was done.
