The tone of the narrator sets the scene for the plot to occur. The emotion feels as though it is directly linked to the mental state of Edgar Allen Poe. He speaks of his insanity, yet tries to display a controlled methodical demeanor. It may lead to the reader to question the sanity of the author especially with the present mental issues. The reasoning is illogical, he calls the old man’s eyes Evil Eye, “For it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye”. (Poe, 1843). The man was so annoyed with the old made that he would rather have him dead than to look at him. Even worse it is a detailed explanation of how the old man was killed.
