The Tell Tale Heart Suspense
Say you are an old man. You live with an unpredictable teenager. You don’t know when your time will come but you know it's coming soon. Very soon. You assume the boy is crazy for a second and forget about it 5 minutes later. You shouldn’t think bad about people.
In the story, The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe describes the fear and excitement of the characters to increase the level of suspense. The text states, “... and the old man sprang up in the bed, crying out - “Who’s there”(Poe 91). This piece of evidence screams character anxiety. “He had been trying to fancy them causeless, but could not. He had been saying to himself - “It is nothing but the wind in the chimney”(Poe 91). This old man is so scared that he is being delusional. He knows that there is someone or something in there making him lose it but he doesn’t know what it is.

He uses a technique called vivid words. “Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror”(Poe 91). The narrator says that the “groan” was one of “mortal terror”. It wasn’t just any groan. the person who was groaning was mortally terrified of what was to come.“First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs”(Poe 93). If this isn’t vivid, I don’t know what is. He killed and cut the old man into pieces. Repetition was a key factor in writing the “The Tell Tale Heart”. The story says, “...for what had I to fear...for what had I to fear”(Poe 93). This raises the tension by getting the mind to think about whether or not he’ll get caught. The text also states, “...but he found it all in vain. All in vain” (Poe 91). Remember the first paragraph when the old man had been trying to calm himself with suppositions and couldn’t? This is what was racing through his mind when he was coming up with these

The issue that drives the story is the beating of the old man’s heart. The narrator is constantly complaining that the old man's, heart was beating unbelievably loud. In the story it says ¨now, I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well, too¨(Poe). He is driven crazy just by the sound of his heart beating,…

In the story “Tell Tale Heart” the author Edgar Allen Poe uses his madness and intention to create suspense. The author builds the story in a way that there's excitement on every page that you read. He uses a different way of writing with his words, he writes his words like he's crazy and with intention. In the story he has the urge to kill the old man because of the man's eye that he thinks is eval. He explains how he kills the man very precisely, also he tells you how he was at the door of the old man's room ready to kill him when the man wakes up, (that's one way that he builds his suspense) and yells “WHO'S THERE” then he stops and waits for the man to lay back down and go to sleep so he can move on with his crime and kill the man, now at this point in the story the suspense is built to the top and you're on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next then he tells you that he hears the heartbeat of…

He takes the negative approach of things, which I say is based from his childhood. As it says in this quote by Poe, "I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity," it seems that he always had seen the negative of things in life instead of positive. As Poe made for his character to obsess over the eye and the heartbeat, I feel that he used a lot of through his negative approach. There is a possibility that he could have used the obsession that he has on his negative and bad childhood and put it into a story, giving the man something to obsess and go insane over. Though Poe didn't go as insane as the man in the story and killed someone, he's definitely not as sane as he could be. He had a different perspective on life, and it wasn't a wrong kind of perspective but it was just not the normal one that you wouldn't normally hear about. Another quote from Poe, "I do not suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it." This quote really makes me think what it was to see life in his shoes. Another reason why his stories were so different and so interesting because he took what he was feeling and put it in book…

Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”, presents to the reader a psychological depiction of a narrator who describes his crime with detailed accounts. This Gothic short story shows the dim side of individuals. The story is narrated in first-person; as a result, the reader is not able to conclude a great deal of what the narrator is saying is true. Poe utilizes his words prudently throughout the story to expose a review of paranoia, insanity, and mental declination. The story is stripped of additional elements as a method to intensify the narrator’s fixation with certain and unembellished objects like the eye of the old man, the heartbeat, and his assertion to sanity. Even though the narrator constantly affirms that he is not insane, the reader could presume otherwise due to his bizarre way of thinking, actions, and dialogue.…

Poe begins his story with his narrator dismissing the idea of him being mad by directly saying, “Why will you say that I am mad?” However, shortly after, the narrator starts to contradict this when he proceeds with long, descriptive sentences. He describes in great the extent the narrator goes to to dispose of the problems with the old man’s eye. These sentences such as, ‘his room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness, (for the shutters were close fastened, through fear of robbers,) and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing it on steadily, steadily”, are lengthy and extremely detailed in order to provide a clear view of the situation. The audience of the piece is thrust into the disturbed state of the narrator through the deep and delving sentences. Poe is asserting that while the narrator claims he is rational, this form of syntax is used to foil the diction and show how irrational the narrator and the situation is.…

Poe’s usage of a first-person narrator gives the readers an insight of the protagonist’s thoughts. The main character first tries to prove his sanity. Despite the fact that he did kill an old man, he still tries to convince the readers that he has not gone mad: “TRUE!-nervous-very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?” (20) Thus, from the very beginning of the story, a sense of insanity can be detected in the main character because of his brief stops and…

A widely acclaimed author named Edgar Allan Poe is known for his bizarre stories on murderers, madmen and mysterious women. In his short story, “The Tell Tale Heart”, the narrator leads us through his thoughts on himself and the actions he took on the old man. The narrator cunningly devised a plan to kill an old man because of his vulture-looking eye. For him, the eye was very disturbing and he decided to forever get rid of it. He doesn’t even find himself mad for doing so. Isn’t it funny how the insane never admit to them being crazy? “The Tell Tale Heart” shows us a fine example of how insane people view themselves and what we think of them as. Thus, this essay will elaborate on the differences between the narrator’s perception of himself and the reader’s perception of him.…

The Tell-Tale Heart Edgar Allen Poe creates an atmosphere of fear and dread in “The Tell-Tale Heart” through suspense and the old man. He creates this ambience by incorporating suspense throughout his story. He does this when the narrator tells us that he sneaks into the old man's room every night for week before he kills him and just watches him. Another way that Poe created a suspenseful moment was when the narrator said “A watch’s minute hand moves more quickly than did mine” (Poe 304). The purpose of this quote is to have the reader on the edge of their seat, waiting to find out what is going to happen next.…

“He had the eye of a vulture, a pale blue eye, whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold” (78). This quote is just one example of the cold and confining words that Edgar Allan Poe uses to define the mood of “The Tell-Tale Heart”. First, the text says, “I saw it with perfect distinctness, all a dull blue, with a hideous veil that chilled the very marrow in my bone” (81). This shows the mood of the story by using terrifying words like “chilled” and “hideous” to captivate the reader. Next, the text says, “In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. First, of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms, and the legs” (81). This shows the mood of the story…

“The Tell-Tale Heart” could be considered a horror story because it has most of the elements of a horror/suspense story. The story has a frightening atmosphere and that type of feeling continues to build throughout the story, the feeling of panic is conveyed through the way the narrator talks and acts through the story, it contains gore how the narrator acts on the man, we find common fears of many of the people around us and ourselves, and the noises that the narrator would describe cause us fear. This is a horror story and should not be read by people who are easily creeped out, but could be read by anyone because the fear was not strong enough to worry, just the common fears of humans. This story plays with the fears of the common people like being betrayed, authority, even if we did nothing wrong, noises that send chills down the listener's spine, the possibility of us being murdered, and the fear we all have when the paranoia sets in, being watched. We all seem to have one of these fears, may it be pushed down far and viewed as insane by us, or constantly feared and come to visit when we least expect it.…

One way Poe puts fear into the readers is his use of internal dialogue. In the story “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the narrator says “but why will you say I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses – not destroyed them – not hindered them.” The narrator believes that his psychopathic disorder improved his senses and allowed him to see and hear things that no one else could. This makes the narrator less of a reliable source and is unstable with what he does. Another example is in “The Raven” when the old man yells “Prophet! Thing of evil! – prophet still, if bird or devil!” In this poem, the old man had gone insane because a raven had flown into his library and had not left when he wanted it to. Although, Poe wants you to question if the bird were actually there. This negates from the credibility of the narrator and makes you wonder if he is insane. In this fashion, Poe adds a veil of horror to his poems and short stories.…

When telling the stories in first person as Poe did, it is hard to determine the real from the false in this type of narrative, as it was with Poe too. He told his stories from the mind of a madman, per se. He tells both stories from the mind of a mentally ill person or from a diseased mind as in “The Tell-Tale Heart”. The disease had sharpened my senses, not destroyed, not dulled them. (The Tell Tale Hears, 692)He talks about his disease, referring to his alcoholism being a mental disease. He proves many times throughout the story that he is a mad man. He talks about killing the old man because his eye reminded him of a bird, just the craziness of the human psyche. Poe has a way of showing and defining the human psyche in a demonic fashion. And yet at the same time act like he is not mad and that is what any normal person would do if they are bothered by something or someone. And he shows realism in doing these acts because of how he shows the human emotion in “The Tell Tale Heart”: “Yet for some minutes longer, I refrained and kept still. But the beating grew louder, louder! I thought the hear must burst. (The Tell Tale Heart, 693) When he was describing the guilt he had after killing the man. He thought it was his heart beating when in fact; it was his own heart pounding and pounding.…
