The Theme Of Innocence In To Kill A Mockingbird

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird the mockingbird symbolizes innocence. There are three people that are mockingbirds. They are all innocent in a way, but are harmed or treated unfairly. In the novel Maudie Atkinson said “... it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (pg. 119) It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they don’t do anything but sing for us. Three people lived unhappy lives and were treated unfairly even though they didn’t harm anyone else. Mayella has never been given respect because she is a Ewell and people treat the Ewells like trash. During the trial Atticus was saying “Miss Mayella” and she thought he was sassing her. Here is an example of how bad Mayella’s life is. “Won’t say a word as long as you keep on mockin’ me.” “He does tollable, ‘cept when-” “Except when he’s drinking.” (pg. 245) This shows that Mayella was afraid of her father and did whatever she had to so she wouldn’t be punished by her father. It was never fully proven that Bob Ewell abused his children, but it was clear they didn’t enjoy being around him and were afraid of him.
