The emotion of loneliness is quite a difficult and scary emotion that is encountered from time to time. Feeling lonely isn't just not having a companion and can be from the mind as well. In this novel, loneliness is the main theme frequently used throughout John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men. Loneliness is portrayed through the characters Lennie, Crooks, and Curley's Wife. Loneliness is one of the many emotions that can create reactions in life.
Lennie is one of the main characters who conveys loneliness throughout the novel. Lennie is mentally challenged. Physically he is not alone because he has George, but mentally he is. His mind works differently than others. For example, Lennie likes to touch soft objects to the extent where he carries around dead mice, "An' you ain't to be trusted with no live mice" (Steinbeck 10). George has to scold him because he doesn’t comprehend that this isn't socially adequate. He's basically trapped inside his own mind. Meaning that Lennie is overwhelmed with his thoughts on everything in life.
Crooks is the only African American on the ranch. He is considered an outsider due to his race. For example, the way he's spoken about, "This is just a nigger talkin', an' a busted-back nigger. So it don't mean nothing, see?" (Steinbeck 71). …show more content…
Curley's Wife is the only woman on the ranch so she is left out because of her gender. She is married to Curley and he doesn’t show her the affection. It shows she feels lonely when she states, "I get awful lonely" (Steinbeck 87) to Lennie. Since she is so lonely she goes into the bunkhouse to find other men for some company. The men would refuse to spend time with her because of her husband's reaction. So she decided to go spend some time with Lennie, a mentally challenged man, and while they were talking she asked Lennie to feel her hair. This lead to Lennie snapping her neck and killing
