Long’s “Don’t Harsh My Mellow… Man!” It was made with watercolor and gouache. Lenny Long is a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. Even though he is not a renowned artist his work is still very interesting and grabbed my attention. The painting looked like it was made up of thousands of dots. Everything was dotted in bright colors and featured alien looking creatures flying around and moving about. Even the plant life looked like it was strait out of Avatar the movie. Everything seemed to be in movement, it reminded me of like a photograph of Time Square New York. Everything is in movement but the painting captures a moment where you can look at it for hours and still find something you haven’t scene. This painting looks very hippy like something that you would find from the 60’s. The thousands of dots that were put into this work made me appreciate it a lot more. Many, many hours must have been put into this piece. Even though it wasn’t made in the 1600’s its still a good work of art. Another piece that I really liked was a piece by Thomas Cole. It was called Landscape (Landscape with tree trunks) made in 1828 and it’s an oil painting painted on canvas. Thomas Cole was an English born artist. He founded the Hudson River School. It was an American art movement that flourished in the mid 19th century. I found this painting very interesting for the way the sunlight was cast over the mountains, clouds and tree. It shows the beauty of dawn in nature on a cold winter day. It reminded me very much like driving through West Virginia because I was there a few weeks ago even though the description says it was painted in The White Mountains of New Hampshire. The sun is almost pushing the clouds out of the way which could even symbolize for good over evil. The detail is phenomenal even down to the trees and leaves. There was frost on the near tree and on the ground giving you a cold chilling sensation of night but the sun that was peaking through the mountains as a new day was coming as sun and the open sky screamed warmth. This painting was in a colonel style room with green walls and white molding with a heavy sent of wood. It added a perspective to it and gave you a sense that you were in the time period it was painted in. The third painting that really caught my eye was a painting by John Singer Sargent called A Boating Party in 1889.
It was painted on oil and canvas. Sargent was an American artist who settled in England. He was considered to be the “leading portrait painter of his generation”. I liked this painting because of its laid back nature. It seemed like these were people of a fairly wealthy family because of the way they are dressed. They are just young adults lounging out on the river having fun on a calm, warm, sunny, Sunday afternoon. The boy in the boat is perfectly relaxed with his hand behind his head and his right leg in his lady’s boat so she doesn’t float away. It just all looks very relaxing and shows how we can have fun without electronics. The lady in the middle is clearly the centerpiece, as she looks beautiful in a white dress and a nice coat, gloves and hat. She looks brighter than everyone else drawing your eyes toward her. My original assumption was that this was portrayed in Louisiana because of the southern style cloths and the colonial style house but on a second look I’m really not sure. This painting made you sit there and think about what it would be like in their position, which captured my full attention. I thought Sargent did a very good job with that and this
piece.
