Mercutio consistently taunts Tybalt. When Tybalt comes looking for Romeo, he asks Mercutio where he is. Mercutio ridicules him and threatens to fight him. “Good Kings of Cats, nothing but one of your nine lives, that I mean to make a bold withal, and, as you shall use me hereafter, drybeat for the rest of eight” (3.1.73-75). If Mercutio was not so arrogant, he would never have been killed. Next, Mercutio also makes stupid decisions like Tybalt. He never knows when to quit antagonizing people and when to shut up. When Mercutio is pushing Romeo to fight tybalt, he says “O calm, dishonourable, vile, submission! Alla stoccata carries it away,” (3.1.72-73). By pushing Romeo to fight when he did not want, it shows that Mercutio does not know when to stop talking. He thinks that he is funny but it crosses the line. His impulsive actions lead to his demise. Lastly, Mercutio also keeps the disagreement between families going. Mercutio is neither a Montague nor a Capulet but Romeo is his friend so he is loyal to him. The reader see this trait shown when Mercutio says, “Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance… You are a lover; borrow Cupid’s wings, and soar with them above a common bound,” (1.4.13-18). This quote is said when Mercutio is trying to convince Romeo to go to the Capulet party.
