During the time of Samuel, why did the people of Israel desire a king? During the time of Samuel, Isael demanded a king. Reason being was basically because other nations had kings and they wanted one too. The typical if he/she has it, then they should too scenario. They did not really need a king, because
they were ruled by God. He was their King. However, the problem with this was that the people of Israel were not focused on the right things. They were focusing on the flesh or human instead of what mattered; which should have been their spirit. Therefore, they decided they need a King because everyone else had one. It says in 1 Samuel 8 that this would happen. It states it clearly in 1 Samuel 8:7 (New International Version), “But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord.” Then in verse 19-20 it states “But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” However, they were not like other nations and because they were directly quoting the Bible, they believed that it was biblical; therefore, it was the right thing to do. So, they got what they wanted and Saul became Israel’s King.
