Mary Shelley wrote ‘Frankenstein’ as an outlet of her experiences throughout her previous years and to express her feelings of grief, anxiety and shock from her childhood. When Mary Shelley was younger, her own ambition was to have a child to love and care for. This ambition and hope was shot down when her baby died soon after its birth. This could be the inspiration that she used for the creation and the unkind response given by the world to it. We learn much about the protagonist victor Frankenstein and his utterly selfish ambition throughout chapter five. This is the…

She first published her book anonymously and called it her “Hideous Project”. The book sets the stage in various parts of Europe. The Gothic Horror genre combined the genres of horror and romance and is often associated with dark castles, murder and monsters. The idea for the novel came about during a dream while Shelley and her husband Percy were staying with Lord Byron. She then used that dream as a basis for a story for a ghost story competition. The story illustrates how the main character Victor Frankenstein, falls into a total destruction due to the usage of his superficial knowledge to play God by creating an abhorrent monster. As a result of his imprudent behavior, the monster undergoes a lot of hardships such as loneliness and ignorance which affect its life hugely. By the halfway of the novel, the monster tells Victor how lonely and sad it is compared to Adam who is the first creation of God. The monster’s speech manifests how appearance has a significant…
Frankenstein, a book by Mary Shelley about a scientist named Victor Frankenstein, exhibits many elements and has lots of hidden symbolism within the text. My creature really shows just how unique this book is by having each body part represent some element of the book. The head of the monster is supposed to represent how quick the monster learns and how reading affected his growth. The monster learns language very quickly “My days were spent in close attention, that I might more speedily master the language; and I may boast that I improved more rapidly than the Arabian, who understood very little and conversed in broken accents, whilst I comprehended and could imitate almost every word that was spoken” (13. 12). This shows how the monster learns very fast, faster than a normal…
Mary Shelley’s style in the novel Frankenstein is quite enthralling. Shelley is a very eloquent writer, and she writes with a romantic style. Her use of diction, sentence structure, and tone tells the reader multiple things about Mary Shelley herself.…

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley certainly worthy of being most influential novel despite the bad reviews received. We can thank Hollywood for making us familiar that the monster is Frankenstein, but Victor Frankenstein, a scientist, creates the monster which has no name. Being written almost two hundred years ago, many critics reviewed the book and all had a different opinion because they interpreted the book differently. Despite the slow beginning of the book, Shelley moves the plot through three characters narration presenting different themes of the book.…
Is it possible that a work of literature can be influenced by the beliefs and events that are occurring during that time period? Mary Shelley's 1818 Novel, Frankenstein, is considered by many, to be the book that began the gothic literature era. Based in Europe, during the beginning of the Enlightenment era, the book explores many topics relating to creation and the position of people in the world. The book, heavily influenced by Shelley's early life, follows young fictitious Victor Frankenstein through his early years in an upper class, European family. Throughout his early years in college, Victor explores the land of scientific knowledge as he studies the new science innovations that were occurring during this time…
When reading the book there are five major themes:. society, nature, ambition, loss of innocence and prejudice. Prejudice being the most prominent because of how the monster is treated, he is looked at and brantley called a monster. Many people are afraid of him and will not give him the chance. This rolls on into society, they are not willing to accept the monster as a being. Frankenstein is also a unusual fellow, he has withdrawn from society to work on projects/experiments. He is also into nature and is why he wanted to go to the most dangerous climate in the entire world. He is also has prejudice against his own creation the Monster. Victor Frankenstein is an ambitious fellow, he wanted to recreate a human being and was successful. The Monster is also ambitious because he wants be become more like “normal” people. Victor felt when he created the Monster regret because of how he felt it was going to hurt people and because of how ugly it was. To be that could be classified as loss of innocence, because he used to not feel as if he was a monster for creating the Monster. He used to be able to just go through to…
The first thing that I have noticed while reading Frankenstein is its simple writing style. Unlike Wollstonecraft’s and Wordsworth’s works, the sentences are of moderate length and simple diction. One of my favorite lines is by Victor Frankenstein: “My life might have been passed in ease and luxury; but I preferred glory to every enticement that wealth placed in my path” (P 9). I find this quote is important because it urges the reader to achieve his/her goals and to establish a reputation for themselves; for it is important to feel pleased with oneself and his/her situation or achievements: self-glory.…

Human beings aren’t perfect, but we try to present ourselves that way. All humans aren’t bad either, but on the other hand, there is some evil in all of us. We do not realize it but the evil in us is always present and can be seen in the smallest things. No matter how benevolent a person is, the generic evil in the person will never fade away. Mary Shelley exposes this malign present in all human beings through her book Frankenstein.
