The Three Witches In Macbeth By William Shakespeare
Would life be different with supernatural powers, or would it all be the same? In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the witches first appear with powers to control the weather and people; Macbeth is given prophecies and soon gets ahead of himself because he believes he is invincible. Macbeth is influenced by his wife and his selfishness while trying to take the thrown for himself and soon finds himself being beat at his own game. Although some people say the three witches are the reason for everything that happens to Macbeth, his tragedy would have still been the same without them because the witches did not show up often, Macbeth would still be selfish, and the prophecies would still be fulfilled. The witches did not show up much throughout the play, which did not allow many supernatural things to take place. When the witches show up for the second time in the play to meet Macbeth, they only tell him what his future will hold. The third witch says, “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!” (I. III. 53). They do not do anything to alter the future of Macbeth, they only tell him that he will be king at some point soon. Macbeth is told something that might make him happier and feel invincible, but nothing truly life altering …show more content…
When the army goes to attack the castle Macbeth is in, Malcolm tells them to grab branches to hide themselves with. Malcolm commands, “Let every soldier hew him down a bough and bear’t before him. Thereby shall we shadow the numbers of our host…” (VI. IV. 6-8). Malcolm tells the soldier to grab big branches and keep themselves covered with them so Macbeth will not be able to tell how many people are coming after him. Malcolm was not aware of the prophecies that Macbeth was given, but the branches made it seem as if Birnam Woods was moving towards his castle which scared Macbeth and fulfilled the prophecy telling him that he would be king until Birnam Woods is

Because of this we are introduced to the idea of the paranormal and witchcraft straight way in the play with the three. This would have scared a Jacobean audience as they feared the supernatural; it also foreshadows the likeliness of disturbed characters to be introduced later in the play.…

In the play, Macbeth Shakespeare represents the supernatural through the characters of the witches. He uses different dramatic techniques in order to interpret his ideas to the audience. The witches are present from the first scene and are not seen without each other throughout the play. The supernatural occurs four times throughout Macbeth: in all the appearances of the witches, in the emergence of Banquos’s ghost, in the witches apparitions with their prophecies, and in the air- drawn dagger that guides Macbeth towards King Duncan.…

The three witches seems like they sometimes foreshadowing Macbeth’s fate, or sometimes they manipulate all events. After they gave some prophecies to Macbeth and Banquo, He pointed out that “If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me/ Without my stir” (I, iii, 143-144) This quote shows his free will. As seen as the words, he thought he can be the king without murder someone, and decided not to kill Duncan. Also, “O, yet I do repeat me of my fury./That I did kill them.” (II, iii, 100-101) Reveals his own decision. However, this also can be understanded as setted fate, because he had to kill the servants to hide what he had done and justify himself, even he didn’t want to kill them. Act I and II, the theme mostly shown as Macbeth’s actions that follow the prophecies witches given to him, such as hesitating murder.…

It is the witches who tell him that he will be Thane of Cawdor and shalt be King hereafter! (Act 1 scene 3). Macbeth is shocked at this news considering the Thane of Cawdor is still alive at the time. This shows that Macbeth was not yet showing ambition or hunger for power but the witches had planted the seed that would lead to his eventual destruction. The witches also prophesy in this scene that Macbeths friend and comrade Banquo will have sons who will claim the throne after Macbeth and be lesser than Macbeth and greater (Act 1 scene 2). This gives the clue that Macbeths line might be short-lived and that once he is gone there will be no more of his descendants on the…
