1. Writer's Background:
2. The Writer's other works: It seems that Longfellow had a way of seeing life as a beautiful work of art and it that sometimes it could be mysterious. Precis of the Short Story: In the poems “the tide rises the tide falls”
5. 1 Technical Details of the Story: The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls A: Setting:
B. Characters:
-Longfellow does not include any humans in the poem, except for a single traveller, “The traveller hastens toward the town” (Longfellow) and a hostler. “Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls” However, Longfellow uses personification in order to use the objects he mentions as characters.

He only refers to objects in nature. “Darkness settles on roofs and walls, But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls” (Longfellow) This allows the author to focus on nature’s beauty. B. Characters: -The characters that are mentioned in the poem are Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his wife Fanny Appleton. His wife died after an ember from their fireplace caused her dress to catch fire. Her death is part of his inspiration to write this poem.

There are no other live characters in the poem. He lays awake at night, thinking of his dead wife. “Here in this room she died”(Longfellow) His use of first person point of view helps him show that he is
