The Torment Of Saint Anthony
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni is better known as Michelangelo. He was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6, 1475. He lived for 89 years and died in Rome, Papal States on February 18th, 1564. According to Gilbert, “Michelangelo is best known for his work as a painter, sculptor, architect, and poet during the Italian Renaissance period.” Gilbert further states “Michelangelo was considered the greatest living artist in his lifetime, and ever since then he was been held to be one of the greatest artist of all time”. There are 2 sculptures that stands out in Michelangelo’s work; which are the David and Pieta sculptures; as well as the Sistine Chapel ceiling painting. This painting is stunning and very perplexing in real life. Of all of the pictures, I chose to do my paper on it because of the details and wondered why so much evil was surrounding him. The brochure from Kimbell Art Museum I read over says The Torment of Saint Anthony is now a permanent collection piece to hang in the museum for now on. The brochure also stated it went from art brokers to different art brokers and ended up in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and it finally ended up in Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, TX. The cost of this painting is stated to be well over six million dollars; however, no specific amount has been confirmed. In addition, the brochure from Kimbell Art Museum says that this painting is Michelangelo’s first painting in the American collection, and painted when he was twelve or thirteen years old; which is totally astonishing to me that at such a young age he could create such art that is now showing in a Museum of art.
