The book “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle”, written by Avi Wortis has one main purpose. That purpose is for the readers to understand what truly happened on the “Seahawk”, the ship which Charlotte rode on. The story starts off in 1832, when Charlotte Doyle was just a 13 year old girl who always acted like a young lady. She wear bonnet, full skirts, high button shoes, and white gloves. Charlotte lived in Providence, Rhode Island, but she lived in England for many years because of her father’s job. While in England, her father was called back to Rhode Island, but he wanted Charlotte to finish her school year. As a result he
sent a ship for her to take at the end of the school year. In the book, Charlotte comes across multiple places. First she finds herself in Liverpool, England, but she isn’t there for long because she boards the “Seahawk” for a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Charlotte is on the “Seahawk” for 3 and a half months and life wasn’t very easy for her. She wasn’t used to all the filthiness and she had no one to talk to except the sailors who were all men so she was also uncomfortable. Life wasn’t very easy for the sailors either. They were all terrified of doing something wrong, because Captain Jaggery would punish them severely. While at sea, they had to listen to the Captain no matter what. Overall, life was miserable on the ship for everyone. There are many interesting characters in this story, but the main one is Charlotte Doyle. On the voyage she had many problems to deal with but her main problem was that Captain Jaggery had accused her of false murder. As a result Captain Jaggery had ordered her to be hung. Luckily Captain Jaggery was swept away by treacherous waves, right before she was about to be hung. It was fate that took care of Charlottes problem.
Throughout the story many problems surfaced. The first argument was between Charlotte and Mr. Grummage. They were arguing about Charlotte going on the ship without the other families to accompany her. Another argument was between Charlotte and Zachariah
